started twice today hauled it home wouldn't start just cranks get a little smoke out the exhaust when cranking ether doesn't help any suggestions

Pull the oil cup from the oil bath air cleaner and see if it is clogged with ice. Diesels need air to run along with fuel. Armand

Put the ether away before you have the top rings all broke. That will lower the compression so it will never start right. Use the glow plugs (make sure they all work) and #1 fuel this time of year. Do the batteries spin it fast enough?

wind chill doesn't make a tractor colder than the outside air temp, the air movement will remove heat from a tractor ect. faster, windchill only affects living things

If you have two 6 volt batteries hooked in series which they came from the factory with I would switch them over to one big 12 volt or two 12 volt batteries hooked in parallel. I have switched so many machines over to 12 volt parallel that were 12 volt series I can't count them all. After switching them we never had a problem starting them again. I did the same with my dad's 560 diesel.

The 560 diesel I had would never start first time of the day without pre-heating. Even if it was 85 degrees out.

BIL had a couple like that. One if it was shut down for more than 1/2 on a hot day wouldn't start without the glow plugs.

Get those batteries charged back up again so that it spins fast enough to make the needed compression.
