-16°....Learning the Baritone Ukulele

As some of you may remember I bought a nice little baritone uke a year ago. Till yesterday my practice sessions consisted of simply playing the sixteen chords on the back cover of the included owner's manual/songbook.

Well, I ventured on....I now have, Row Row Row Your Boat down pat. Now it's on to, He's Got The Whole World In His Hands, and the other six songs.

Having fun. Determined to play many instruments some day.

I learned on the baritone uke. Nice little instument. You can quickly move on to guitar---chording is same, just add two strings. If you have a desire to move up to guitar, do it soon before you pick up too many bad habits on the uke.

Its similarity to the guitar is why I chose the baritone. Just a beginner here....What bad habits am I likely to develop on the uke?

Got one for the daughter for Christmas last year. While watching TV yesterday I pulled up a YouTube I remembered seeing.
Ukulele orchestra of great Britain the good, the bad, and the ugly. Watch it kinda humorous.

Fingering on some chords (C, for example: learn to use pinky, not ring finger.) Make chords on uke same way you would on bottom four strings of guitar, minus two strings. Also, with uke you probably won't learn how to use flat pick.

Jerry,
Is the following fingering correct:
-First fret = index finger
-Second fret = Ring finger
- Third fret = Third finger
-Fourth fret = Pinky

If so, C chord would require use of index and ring finger. What is a chord vs. a note? I have simply been going by the fingering guide in my simple manual/song book.

Thanks,
Glenn

Sorry, Glenn, I meant G chord. On Baritone uke you make the G chord by pressing bottom (thinnest) string on the third fret. The reason I say use the pinky is that when you begin to play guitar it's easier and faster to change into the C chord from the G chord than if you use ring finger. If you have further questions e-mail is open.

I remember your post, because about that same time I bought a guitar. I had bought the granddaughters guitars, then realized somebody in the family needed to learn to play if they were to pick it up. It's also something I've wanted to do for a long time and figured I'm not getting any younger. So I've been trying to teach myself to play for the past year with some success. I fully intend to take some lessons one of these days.
