the neighbor down the road in PA has some bee hives, a bear knocked them over,so now he has electric fence around them,it seems to be working so far

I think I'd have a new bear rug too.
Our experience down here in WV, where we have lots of bears, is that electric fence is very effective on bears. They have destroyed about all the fence row fruit trees. trees planted by oldtimers or birds and animals carrying seeds. They are much easier to control by electric fence then deer.

If he gets lucky it might work but a bear has thick skin and all so maybe not. Sure wish I could still work with bees I loved it but after 150 plus stings that is a thing of the past for me
if a bear gets through - tell him to try electrifying some barbed wire instead.
Bears have such thick fur that they'll likely just barge through (the way my stupid goats do with their winter coats...)
The barbs on barbed wire would reach through the fur much better and give them a good zap.

When the skunks find them, they can walk under the wire and WILL clean them out.
From beekeeping magazines some years ago: One beekeeper had trouble with people stealing his fence charger. He put the charger inside an empty top section of a hive with the bees in the lower sections.
Another beekeeper had trouble with bears. He got an old transformer from a theater marquee, laid down a grid of wire on the ground, and plugged it to household current. One night he heard a bear screaming as it ran off in the distance.
