Sachs Dolmar saw

Anyone know anything about this brand of chain saw? Neighbor gave me one that was too heavy. It's got an 18 inch bar on it and it says Forester on the bar. I'm not sure how old it is but it is all metal. It runs like a top but was a bear to get started. It hadn't been used in years. It is a little heavy but seems to have lots of power. She said she paid $400 for it new many years ago. I'm guessing it is a Stihl equivalent?

I"ve owned my for several years. It is one tough saw, it"ll handle almost anything. Actually runs and cuts better than my stihl

I bought mine used 4 years ago. Not a light weight saw, but very powerful and reliable. No problems, runs excellent--best running saw I ever had. Mine is probably 15 years old, so newer ones may be lighter, size for size.

If it hadn't been run for years you were lucky to get it started at all. Did you have to pour a little fuel in the carburetor to get it to go? Honestly, I would put a little sea-foam in it, I've had it work wonders in that situation. If you use it occasionally it will probably work fine for many years, they have a very good reputation.

Well known in Europe, did not seem to establish much of a dealer network here, my next saw will be a Dolmar.

Bought one new 4 years ago. Traded in a POS Stihl MS290 for it. FINALLY - a saw that actually RUNS and WORKS! Never so glad to get rid of that STILL. It looked good on the bench, but was afraid of trees.

Great German saw, several steps above a Stihl, in my opinion. That and Husqvarna are the best made, again, in my opinion.

Forester is the model name of the bar. I forget who made that bar, maybe GB from Australia? No relation to the saw model tho.

I know a guy that had one as I recall it was a screamer, really went through the wood you have a keeper

Sachs is, or was, a very high quality West German saw. Makita bought them out and produce borh Makita and Dolmar saws today. I own 2 Sachs-Dolmars, 3 actually, and the running ones are great saws. Easily equal in quality to Stihl or Husky/Jonsereds of the same era. If it's an older saw the ID tag may still be on the handle or engine, or it may be gone. A picture might help ID it. You can also go to this website- http://www.acresinternet.com/cscc.nsf/GasbyManufacturer?OpenView&Start=30&Count=30&Expand=36#36 and start looking through the Sachs models there to see if you can ID it.

Forester is a medium quality bar, still made today. Decent stuff, not too expensive, but not original equipment on a Sachs. The Sachs will likely take the same bar mount as a Husky/Jonsereds. Parts can be iffy for the older ones, but so are older Husky parts these days. If it's running now, do everything you can to keep it that way!

I love Dolmars. More saw for the buck when bought in the USA. Technically, Dolmar has been around a little longer then Stihl. The guy that created the Dolmar saw company used to work alongside Andreas Stihl when they were both salesmen for another company. Then - they both went out on their own. Emil Lerp names his company after Mt. Dolmar. Stihl names his company after himself. Makita owns the USA-branded version of Dolmar and often has some great deals. The last two I bought (2 years ago) were still made in West Germany.

I have a Sachs Cut-off saw. Use to work great...but I have had that thing apart 1/2 dz. times and still have problems. It will bogg down while trying to cut. Have cleaned and adjusted carb to no end. Anyone have a few tips for me to pursue? Probably very similar motor to a chain saw. Yep, it is a well made product.
Thanks guys...bOb

Don't get me wrong the Dolmar chainsaws are great saws but guys here are comparing Stihl with it but they are useing the U.S.A. built Stihl. If your going to compare saws compare German Dolmar to German Stihl. The German built Stihl saws are only found in their larger pro saws today. This also goes for Husky saws only their larger saws are made in Sweden. From the saws you see used by most people (Stihl or Husky) are not made in their mother country.

No, I'm comparing Sachs Dolmar built in W Germany with Stihl of the same era built in W Germany, back before it became one Germany again. I have 80's and early 90's Stihl, Husky and Sachs. This guy isn't talking a modern Dolmar, he's talking a Sachs-Dolmar. As former Husky dealer I am intimately aware of who made what where and when. I'm not confusing a Husky built Poulon design with a 266 for instance.
