trains, the canadians must know something

i was enjoying a rfd train show that recorded recently on my dvd, besides the extreamly beautiful scenery in the show the thing i noticed most was in like probably 6 or 8 different trains both freights and passenger types not 1 single train car had any punk gang grafitti on it, none of them, so what do the canadians do that we dont, [i see our from the 50's and '60's dont have it either]

New York City Transit Authority attacked graffiti back in the eighties by aggressively removing graffiti from subway cars the day it was painted. The graffiti "artists" moved on to other targets when they realized their art wouldn't see the light of another day.

Where I live in central New York - the railroad used to be D & H. They had awful maintenance and frequent derailments including one huge propane explosion. Their local shop was 20 miles from me in Oneonta. Then Canadian-Pacific took over. Not a single derailment since. They also have a kind-of neat Christmas train come through once a year. The CP trains that come through here though have plenty of graffiti on them.

they must have chosen the cars carefully for the show, lots of cars with graffiti on them up here, although it does seem better than years ago...

I've recently seen trains here in MN with little or no graffiti on them. Mostly newer coal and tanker cars.

ok, they might have chosen the cars, i just wondered if they didnt have the problem up there as much due to a certain type of people not being up there or if they kept them painted or had a different type of delivery system set up where the cars dont sit on sidings or at buildings for a long period of time, im not sure but i cant picture much of this nasty graffity being applied in rail yards here as most of them have people around all the time, just wish society hadnt come to allowing this stuff to get applied to them in the first place

I remember when the only place you would see it was in NYC. Now its prevalent around here. "Tagging" which could denote gang activity is something to be aware of if its in your neigbhborhood. Some of the graffiti art work shows the talent of these people, just where they put it might be inappropriate, defacing public or private property.

What I don't get, if they have the ambition to paint the whole side of a train car, why don't they get a job and get paid for it. We farm near some rail tracks, mostly grain and coal cars going by, but man how many cans of paint it must take to paint some of the stuff they have painted and the cost of all that paint, makes no sense to me.

Not trains, but dumpsters around here. I have a friend who used to work for the city here, repairing and repainting dumpsters. One of the things he talked about doing was taking a newly tagged dumpster and trading places with another tagged one from a different part of town. We all wondered about what kind of gang war he was starting.

You really don"t think that they pay for the paint do you? My sister owns 2 ACE hardware stores in Tucson, AZ and they keep all of the spray paint in locked racks per city ordinance. Jf

I live on the UP mainline and have noticed a couple things. The coal trains are almost totally graffiti free, also the ethanol grain cars and tankers are mostly clean. The coal trains never sit in a yard they are always moving, the ethanol cars may sit at the Ethanol plant but not in the yards. The freight cars that sit in yards in the cities are covered in paint, including grain cars from places like ADM that sit in cities. Some of the freight trains are so painted up that the only ones you notice are the clean ones.

In the yard at Allouez WI there was the graffiti,
in 4 foot high letters, 'POINTESS VANDALISM'.

The stupid bastid misspelled the word 'pointless'
I wonder if he ever knew.

I live just outside Toronto Ontario Canada.

We were working on a project and the customer brought in a coatings specialist. This specialist had invented an anti graffiti coating that can be applied to anything. Easy clean up of almost anything that goes on after the coating has been applied.

He asked us to take him into Toronto to check out all the graffiti. He thought he was going to find a large market for his product. He was very disappointed. One of the guys drove him all around downtown and they found very little graffiti.

The cold is a factor but are population is also a lot lower and our gangs much smaller. The city has also hired graffiti artist to do complete walls on buildings and I've seen buses done as well.

Some of these graffiti artist are very talented.

I live on a Ont. Mich . border, the trains cross daily and I see graffiti more and more on the box cars . Years ago my grandfather was a watchman in the yard and I supposed that stopped a lot of it .Some people have great talent, but it doesn't belong on the railroad !!

Love that RFD "Trains and Locomotives"..

Youtube has a great variety of videos.

Look up "train vs Tornado" sometime..or "N&W 611 Slips ans stalls".

Much worse in Italy than here. That really surprised me - it's e-v-e-r-y where.

You'd think a huge beautiful travel destination like Rome would crack down on it - but it's just everywhere.

Once in a while our elevator gets in a Mexican train. They are always completely covered in paint.
The "Mexican" trains also have all the aluminum lids replaced with fiberglass lids. Otherwise the trains come back to the states with half the lids missing. Amazing how hard a thief will work to avoid a job!

I actually like to read the train as it goes by. I see lots of Canadian plywood coming down and lots of grafitti. I really can't read the letter font styles they use. On the other hand my nephew can read them well. Some of the vandals [ as they sure are not artists] do some nice highlighting and adding depth to the letters. These are not five minute jobs and they look like they work off ladders too.The chemical cars don't have any so they must get stored and watched over differently.

Sorry to say. but we have plenty of useless scum here too that will deface public and private property. That being said, you be pleasantly surprised at how clean the city of Toronto is. With the Canadian dollar taking a dive, only .91 cents US ,you all should come on up and visit north Americas 4th largest city. Bruce

I have been meaning to do that. I would like to visit the hot rod shop called Oddball Customs. I have vacationed in Canada before and I was born in Kapaskasing [ a little colder that Toronto].

There is some beautiful artwork on those trains. I saw one that had a portrait that looked like a photograph...

I remember large train yard in oneonta years ago looks like there about all gone now. SUNY Delhi class of 79.

Toronto clean? I thought it's the smog capital of Canada? Well, I guess if you caught him in one of his drunken stupors, you could smoke crack with the mayor! LoL

I agree, the art is sometimes pretty good and sometimes I get a laugh out of it. The best car I ever saw was a full length 9 the entire box car as well as head to toe) painting of Lois Griffin from the Family Guy, only she was laid back like Kate Winslet was in the movie Titanic... yes, fully nude. Truely art but I think the subject matter being so different and funny added to it. I would pay money for a picture of that car since I have remembered it for years now.

While I agree, its a waste of time and paint, how many of you are going to hire somebody to tag your barn or machine shed? Ya, if nobody is hiring, your skills are worthless. What do you do if you have the cure to cancer and nobody is buying? Yep, sit home.

You should write for the tourism bureau. "Hey, it sucks here too but your money goes 9% farther....So we got that going for us."

Why do I laugh when I think about seeing a full page ad like that in one of those sky traveler magazines as Im 1/2 way to Hawaii?

We did it to them by having an artist paint some great pictures of the early days in town on all the blank walls. Sure has cut down on graffiti.

We were in western Canada years ago. There was a high grade and not much room. They made 2 circle tunnels to do it. We saw 3 engines on the front and 2 or 3 in the center going through all of this. The last car was going through the first tunnel when the lead engine was about to come out of the upper grade. I would love to ride their rails like along the Columbia.

The only ones building any railroads is ADM in Decatur, IL. Everyone else is tearing our their's and we are helping pay for them to do it.

I worked as a Locomotive Machinist/Mechanic at
BNSF "Northtown Diesel Shop", at Minneapolis
Minnesota, Which was right next to the "Hump"
I"ve seen lots of Graffiti, but also some very
fine art work, on boxcars, and hoppers. I think
that the railroads should run talent contests, for
the young people, provide special,Blank cars, and
award scholorships!
