diesel fuel or kerosene

I have a 1952 John Deere R tractor that really don't use very often and I only have 5 gallons of diesel in it. its been 2 maybe 3 years since I added any should I use kerosene instead? will diesel go bad like gas? or should I drain it out? its not fun priming that old R thanks Howard

I would drain it out. Diesel will grow bacteria in it that can make a real mess of the fuel system. Put in fresh with some fuel treatment to preserve it.

kero will grow it too.. if there is water in it.

i'd drainit out and save it. get it running on some treated diesel or kero with lube mod in it. then filter the old fuel and use it up.

I have two deeres ( R and 830)that sat for 12 years with full diesel tanks that had been treated for bio and antigel. both fired up and ran with no problems. If any algae is visible than dump it. Bill

After sitting with lots of oxygen and moisture in the air above it, it could have plenty of water from condensation, which will then grow stuff. I always use diesel and keep the tank full when stored to prevent condensation.

I've been using up a tank of diesel that was filled in 1992. I.e., 22 years old and no problems. But it is the "old" diesel. The new ultra-low sulfur diesel is much more apt to retain water and get bacteria. The "new" diesel also gels at higher temps. Today's ultra-low sulfur before any additives can gel at 6-10 degrees F. Modern low sulfur kerosene gels at 30 below F.
