A dairy farmer only a few miles away from my house was killed chopping hay for bedding.I just found out so don't know much.He did have small children. The farm is in small village of Westford NY. Greg

So sad, he was working trying to MAKE a living, while so many are sitting on their cans, on the Public Dole.

Hope the family will be able to carry on somehow with friends and family..

Ron.

Sorry to hear that. I had a cousin killed while chopping silage, his family never got over it. We also have had at least two young farmers killed by falling into diet feeders.....I don't know how or why you would fall into a diet feder but it did happen. Be real careful out there........Sam

You can go to WKTV chanel 2 Utica NY dot com for more info. His name was Dan Banks he was trying to free up pto.We also have had to many young people hurt in farm accidents in our area.Greg

I hate to suggest this, incase any family of his googles his name and finds this post...

but, if you are a farmer who owns a tractor with a pto, o any moving parts, please do an unfiltered search for accident photos and coroner photos of someone wrapped up in a machine.

You see that just one time in your life, and you look at that picture for 30 seconds and think about how the last moments of your life would be shear panic and terror and extreme pain and agony. After that, you will never mess around again with the potential for a pto accident.

I think it should be mandatory for everyone to see that.

(quoted from post at 23:18:51 01/28/14) Very sad. about 3 hours from me.
Reminds me I still need to get/make a cover for PTO ORC setup

As long as you are not near the PTO and related parts while the tractor is running it's not a problem. If you follow safety procedures and shut the tractor off before getting near those components the shields will not prevent an accident because the cause has already been removed. Basically the shields are a manufactures out from a potential lawsuit. Only smarts on the part of an operator on sire can prevent an accident.

I live just a few miles away and saw it in the paper. 40 years old and renting the farm (Dan Banks). I assume he had no anti-tangle sleeve on the PTO shaft and was also working near it when it was turning. That's asking for trouble but I've done it myself when in a hurry. Hey, stuff happens. Last farmer I knew that got killed in Westford did it when he got done milking cows and went to mow his lawn. He had a new John Deere lawnmower. He rolled it over on himself (Mr. French).

He worked our family farm - was good guy and a hard worker. It's a shame - I've known at least three guys in my area killed by equipment, and close to ten that have lost limbs
Dickie French was killed trying to back a haybine down a hill he couldn't get up.

I'll echo Bushog's statement. He wasn't the kind of guy who chose to sit around and wait for the welfare check. He was a 'salt of the earth' person working hard to make a living and in the prime of his life. I pray for his wife and kids. Jim

It was just temporary. We always did it that way. I have enough common sense to stay out if the way. Mind your own business. We were in a hurry. Couldn't see spending the money on that......
Too bad all the maimings and deaths still don't convince all the invincable people.

You're right about that John. When we were in ag class in high school [1960] they showed us a picture of a local farmer the got tangled up in a pto shaft and a leg was the only part of his body that wasn't wrapped around the pto shaft, never forgot that photo and never took chance around a pto shaft. I Know that man's two sons and they both witnessed it. Chuck
