The Mission Valley of Montana at 24 Below with 2 ft of snow

We have a cold spell here in the Mission Valley so as I checked our waterer, I took some pictures.
The Missions are covered as you can see in the first two shots.
Picture #3 is a shot of our cows in the N40 sunnin' up there outsides.
#4 shows how frosty our yearlings are in this cold air. They have to be pretty well insulated to stay frosty. The high yesterday was -1F and the low last night was -24F. That's pretty cold for this country and somewhat rare. We're lucky we don't get much wind here at our ranch during these cold spells. Some of the windchills are -40F in other location near by.

that kind of weather tests man and machine, and animals, hope it warms soon for you. You live in a beautiful place, thanks for photos

Jerry,
Thanks for the awesome pics. I always liked Big Sky country. Very nice scenery there. Your pics could be postcard quality in my mind! Your cattle look very good too. Do you have any kind of shelter for them out there? They sure are tough to survive those temps. I always felt my cattle in my barn with lots of bedding were cold in the winter here in Minnesota. LOL

Great pictures & nice country Jerry. I'm out in the s.e. corner of Mt.. We have lot's less snow but still plenty of it, the wind took most of our snow !! Temps. about the same as yours. I just don't have any mountains to look at!

nice photos Jerry... looks like the Canadian prairies, only with mountains...lol...

I always marvel at the frost on the back s of our cattle too. Not sure about you place, but the wind here has been terrible this winter, i don't mind the cold, but the wind sure makes it disagreeable.

ice place you got there with that mountain back ground.

Wonder if you get these effen Chinooks there too like they do in Southern Alberta??

Jerry,

What general part of Montana is Mission Valley. Been through a few different areas of your beautiful state - maybe Mission Valley?

When I see conditions like this I think about my whining crybabies down here. Temp was +18 last night. Had snow flurries today. Keep fresh hay in front of them, get fed twice a day, have heated water, loafing shed open to the South with a concrete floor and on and on.

Nice pics and beautiful country. YOU enjoy it.

Mark

We get 'em and they come from the SE up the Jocko Canyon. They'l eat all that snow you see in 24 -36 hours.

Hi Kurt,

Those cows have no shelter escept some straw bedding but we are fortunate in that we seldom get winds with these low temps. We feed pretty heavy and thankfully these cold periods don't last long here - usually!

These cold surges generally come with easterly winds and the Mission Range on our East blocks them. Our high winds come out of the SE generlly and they are generally warm winds that melt the snow in about a three mile swath that runs SE to NW and we are right in the middle of that swath.

Believe me it's hard to enjoy the view when it's -24F but it is easy on the eyes! Glad you enjoy the pictures.

Jerry MT,

Oh, man - that is just beautiful. Thanks for posting.

Pastor of our church moved from Whitefish, MT to the flatlands of MN about 5 years ago. Your photos make me wonder, "Why?!! Why would anyone ever leave there?"

Christmas Card material!!!!!!!!!! beautiful compared to the gray, windy mid to upper 20's we've had here the past few days.

(quoted from post at 02:19:44 02/07/14) How about these?

ery pretty place, Jerry, both winter & spring, but I think the cattle look happier in the spring, like I know I would be. I'm sitting here inside at 70F with a coat on!

yeah this country is easy on the eyes.
But we're in a big fight over our irrigation water with the Tribe and the BIA trying to drive us off our fee land. This is an "open reservation" when government policy wanted assimilation of Tribal people into the general population so 90% of the irrigated land is owned in fee and 80% of the population is non-Triba.l Federal policy changed in 1934 and that and further in 1973 and the Tribe is trying to get control of the water, (inspite of the fact that the irrigation Project was specifically built for tribal and non-Tribal people) and drive the non-Tribal people out. Congress, who created this mess, won't deal with it and there is this constant tension. So the adage about beauty only being skin deep is true. If we don't get our water rights settled and maintain our historic water deliveries, we will be forced to leave. That's easier for me but there are descendents of homesteaders that have large farms and ranches that will be put out of business if these events come to pass and all the fruits of their families generational work (over 100 years worth) will lost! I'm an irrigation commissioner so I'm in the thick of it.

That's probably more than you wanted to know. My point was that looks can be decieving. Thanks for letting me vent.

Maybe I've gone past your place. Went north from Missoula and along the west side of Flathead Lake back in about 2000.

My cousin's wife was Postmistress (proper term?) in Ronan back in the late '90s and early 2000s.

Well, I hope you can stay - and the other ranchers too.

That's the government for you... around here they are trying to shove a new freight/high-speed rail line down the throats of citizens. People have been fighting it for at least twelve years!

Then they just change tactics and select a new route -- then the lawsuits all begin again.

I saw those pics and was ready to pack up and move. Then I saw the green pics as was moving faster. Then you mentioned indians and I quit packing. We have enough problems with them around here without having them control our water too! So much for Montana.

I feel for ya guy.

Yep the only easy way to get to Kalispel from Missoula is on US 93 and that goes right through the Mission Valley and through the towns of St. Ignatius, Ronan, and Polson. It's generally nice and green in the summers due to our irrigation water and people often compliment irrigators for keeping it that way. For how much longer?
