LCD display?

Anyone have one of these or ever worked on one?

It"s from a GSI Autoflow grain drying control. It has low brightness and I wondered if it"s something easily fixable to increase the brightness. It"s a 4 line by 20 character LCD display with LED backlight.

Thanks for your advice.

A couple possible fixes"

1 - Insert/remove the display from the mating connector several times. Often a dim display is the result of oxide film/dirt accumulated on the connector contacts. Removing/reinserting a few times may "clean up" the contacts and make the display brighter.

2 - The display board MAY brightness adjustment. Look for an adjustable pot on the circuit board. Note the original position of the pot then carefully turn it a bit (1/8 turn max) clockwise and try it.

If that amber is not for the readout color it appears that the display has been discolored by heat or fumes?
Sun?

Owner manual available online? Some of those displays have contrast adjustments by just entering a code on the keypad and then hitting the enter button. Also, might want to take the stray static warning seriously, too. The nylon carpet or not grounding yourself be handling circuit board could be lethal . . .

yeah - that looks nasty - totally yellowed by sunlight.

That may be the whole problem.

Not sure If that front panel pops off or is replaceable.

LCD's need a layer of polarizing material to make the digits visible - be sure you don't remove that.

I saw something similar at a gas station pump. The display that got the most sun was yellowed and hard to read. the other side was much better.

Can the LCD be removed from the controller board? Or is it soldered in place? Your best bet is to replace just the LCD, but you'll need to find a compatible replacement. They're not all the same. Most have a 4/8 bit parallel interface, but there are serial versions as well. The parallel LCDs are typically based on the Hitachi HD44780; you can find more info at the link below.

Although the backlight on these units is externally adjustable, the contrast is not. You're not clear whether the problem is contrast or backlight brightness. If it's contrast, you'll need to replace it. The backlight is often controlled by a pair of resistors, you can change of them to turn up the backlight.

If the LCD is soldered in place, don't try to replace it unless you have the proper equipment and you have experience repairing multi-layer printed circuit boards. You're better off sending it back to the manufacturer.

By the way, carpets and microelectronics are a bad combination. Static electricity is the enemy, and you should keep the board and yourself grounded as much as possible.

I use to sell those displays to Miller Electric for their robotic welders and also to a company that repaired gas pumps.

The display company is still in business and the part is listed as good on their website.

Your better off with new. That part your showing is from the 12th week of 1995. They degrade over time and it's 19 years old.

Might cost you $120.00 or maybe less if it's in stock. I use to sell that one in 1000 pc volume for about $14.00 but that was 20 years ago.

I am a retired electronics technician, but am not familiar with that particular unit, however from personal experience I would try Gerry...WI's suggestion. If that does not work out you may want to try the plexiglass polish they sell at many of the auto parts places. It will help for a while, assuming the main problem is the hazed plastic lens.
