Case 1370 tractor

A friend is going to look at one. Were any revisions made during the production run? Different options? Things to look out for. Thank you.

I remember that they are supposed to be extremely strong and durable, I think that they tended to have power shift problems. Big dumb power. too big for a chore tractor. You should post this on the Case board.

It's going to be used in the field and not in the barnyard. He needs a cheap tillage tractor. Are they good on fuel?

I put thousands of hours on a 1370 and they are nothing like running a clumsy 5010 JD, they are heavy but "big dumb power" is not how I would describe them at all, but again this is my thoughts others may vary, they seem too here a lot LOL

worked hard they burn fuel, plowing with mine in sod running 16 hr days I would burn 100-110 gal, but still much less than a comparable sized JD by at least a 1/3 if not half(yes I had neighbors working with us with JD's to compare to), yes the PS can be damaged by improper use and lack of service but they are very powerful units, they did have some updates through out production such as planetary upgrades in the first year or two and a HP rerating in 1973 also park lock was added in 1976

The white cab models are newer. They are 1000 PTO only. Usually a good tillage tractor. The power shift is aggressive when at full throttle. The ride is not the best. They are a shorter wheel base tractor and they buck on rough ground.

Engine was a bullet proof. Just make sure the power shift is working correctly. Good heavy draw bar and hitch.

Also there is on position that you should not use the PTO for stationary work. I think you have to make sure the PS lever is not in reverse???? I don't remember exactly what it was but I do remember that you can damage something doing that. The case fellows can tell you what it is.

They usually can be bought for about half of what a JD or IH of the same size brings. I see good clean ones that are in the low to mid teens in price and I do mean CLEAN. Rough ones can be as low as $5000-7500.

Working on some things on them can be a bear. The hood goes under the front of the cab. So getting to the brake valve is a PIA. It always seemed to me they where designed for open station work and then the cab added. So they are not the easiest to work in the dash/firewall area.

(quoted from post at 11:10:43 03/23/14) "big dumb power"???

Nutty, I didn't mean it in a derogatory sense. Just that they have their place, no frills compared to today's tractors and not really useful for something like haying, but for heavy tillage or pulling a big manure tanker they are great.

you are 100% correct on the PS lever not being left in rev, while doing stationary PTO work, and yes the PB valve is a pain to work on with a cab as well, I have built a special wrench to remove the hyd line that does allow you to remove them some what easier

Hi
Not strictly 1370 related but may apply anyway. my buddy operates an 1175. he has found out certain parts are no longer available from case, some that are available are horrible prices.
most of the parts that can"t be got from Case are gone in the wrecking yards as they all start to get the same thing wrong.
The biggest thing that would put me off other than that would be the power shift.

This is why my buddy got the 1175 it don"t have one. so no mega bills or buying a new tractor when the shift quits and it"s more to fix it than the tractors worth.

Not trying to start a crap war with guys that had one in 1976 and it was a good tractor.even 2290 newer tractors make nothing round here because of the bad transmission reputation.
Kinda like massey 1135 on the massey board, many are in the junk because of failed transmissions and hydraulics. yes it was a good tractor in 76 but they are heading to 40 years old now, many hours worked and a good chunk of abuse on some.!
Regards Robert

Robert is correct that CNH is obsoleting certain parts, a few years back I called CASE direct and asked why, after 15 min of being transferred I was told point blank," there are way too many of those "70" series tractors running still, we need to sell NEW ones" really put a bad taste in my mouth but I guess you cannot blame them really, as for parts so far I am confident you can find anything you need although you may have to find it used, sadly this is the way things are going
