natural gas company has been replacing lines, house was warm from a sunny day, didn"t think nothing about, friday am, getting cool in house, checked furance, piolt light out, lite it, took shower, warm h2o, huh, next day cold h20 in shower, never put 2&2 together, gas was shut off for the day while gone, they didn"t leave a note...

I always thought they couldn't turn it back on without checking inside the building to make sure all pilots were lit and OK.

And they're supposd to tell you what they are doing and make appointment to relight the pilots if you are not home when the work is done.

In our area of MI, Consumers Power will shut it off at the meter and put a tag on the door if they can"t get in to relight.

That is a good way to get people killed.... Whatever gas company that is could get in allot of trouble for doing that....

Yep but they're the power company so they don't have to follow the law and no one is going to do anything about it. They own most of the politicians and a few of the Judges, heck one place I lived in one of the county judges was married to a power company executive. Funny part about that one is the power would go off in the court house a night or at least drop a phase so he wouldn't have air conditioning when he came in a 4AM in the morning. He'd rant and rave at me about it, I'd mention that the power went off and if it was such a big deal he should haul WPS and their executive into court and throw the book at them, that'd sometimes calm him down, if it didn't I'd suggested he contact the county board and get them to add 24/7 maintenance coverage for the courthouse, it'd only cost them about $250,000/ year or add about 25% to the maintenance department budget, the board would be glad to move money from the court's budget into the maintenance budget.

Drop a little note to your Public Service Commission, or what ever it is called in your state. You can bet someone will be in trouble(private contractor?)
