OT Smoke Detector FYI

I am getting false alarms on my home smoke detectors. It is the second round of this has happening in 10 years.

It appears that dust from the attic is infiltrating the ceiling boxes and clouding up the photoeye. The manufacturer has recognized this problem and is now supplying gaskets to seal them on the top.

Mine are sensitive. On nice days, I like to open the windows, but the humidity will set them off. Then I have to turn on the AC to bring the humidity in the house back down. Annoying

Mine are sensitive and go off if battery is getting low. I change out my smoke detectors every 7 years.

You want your smoke detectors to work. After clean-up of soot, smoke and replacement of damaged goods, final bill was $90,000. Crock pot shorted out sitting on the stove top.

there are basically 3 types of detectors--ionization. photocell. and heat--i don't use ionization near a shower or in the kitchen and use heat at top of stairways

Wow! Glad it wasn't even worse.

I've always been chicken to plug one in and leave it -- our house is ancient, our wiring is OLD.

Most of ours are about 6-8 years old. I was pricing new ones and found they were averaging over $20.00! I remember them being around $7-8.00. Has something changed?

Mark-Ia,
$90k? Are you serious? I completely redid my kitchen for $ 10k. When we had a fire at a company I worked for, the smoke restoration only cost about $10-15k IIRC (for a 20,000 sq ft bldg. with about 3000 sq ft of office space). They came in, replaced the ductwork that couldn't be cleaned, cleaned all the carpets, used special cloths to wipe down every desk, book, pencil, pen in the place. I'd be curious to see how that little fire got to $90k. I see about $2-3k in damage from your pix. If you upgrade the countertops with granite, I could see a jump in the bill.
