The tracks?

Maybe it was a sprayer/chariot with the horses spaced in front of the wheels to minimize damage!

Local spray place has an old sprayer made mostly out of wood. Wooden tank, with ground drive pump.

Bullseye! It was quite a joke amongst the 'Young Farmers' clubs here in The UK when the movie first came out. Roman tramlines indeed.
