Some people have money

I went to an estate sale this morning. It was a small farm close to me. They had a MF 135 diesel without power steering and was in clean condition. Sold for 6K. Before the sale started, I went over and took a quick look at all the items I was interested in, hurried back home and decided on max price I would bid. I don't go beyond that amount!
They had several Stihl chainsaws, two Stihl blowers, Stihl pole saw, two gas generators. All these items were several years old.
I looked all items up on ebay under "sold items" and averaged the price of each item.
Bottom line----ALL items went for nearly TWICE my max, and the pole saw sold for $20.00 more then a new one!!
There were at least eight bidders for every item. Some started for more then my max.
I don't think the buyers at this auction were hurting for money.

Our farm shop burned in 1976. So we thought we would hit auctions to try to replace some things. We were trying to bid on a Walker 4 ton floor jack. They said it leaked down some, and it went for more than a new one.

We finally gave up on auctions and started buying new stuff.

(quoted from post at 22:20:27 04/12/14) thank god you did your home work, huh :)

Well---I have worked on chainsaws, and other lawn items, for many years and have sold many. I could have just looked at them and bid without research but I had the time so why not!
I have several chainsaws for sale and I have trouble selling. Yes, I did my homework!
Ohhh- maybe I should have an auction LOL!!

Sometimes, when a seller is in hard times, friends and family will overpay for items they need to buy anyway, just to help the seller out. It still takes two bidders willing to pay for that to work out. At estate auctions, friends and family will also overpay for items that hold sentimental memories for them.

For some it is the competition of the auction - they gotta win at
all costs. Myself, I'm looking for bargains on items I can
actually use. Most time I go home empty handed!

Don' think that was the case here. This estate was from an elderly man who lost his wife last year and there were no heirs. The estate administrator was also a friend of mine and wasn't related. Just a very good long time friend.

That's been my experience with live auctions, used
up junk selling for more than new!

Went to a police impound auction many years ago.
There were rows and rows of cars and trucks. You
could look at anything you wanted to look at, but
no starting them. Saw some of the most useless
wrecks imaginable go for outrageous amounts of
money!

Later someone told me some of those bidders were
actually car thieves that needed a clean title and
VIN number for one of their less that legal
vehicles... Go figure.

Some people have more money than they do sense.

I went to an auction, and they had a lot of tools from Harbour Freight new still in the package and the price tag on them.
Stuff marked as an example $9.99: People paid twice the price that was marked on the package.
Try to figure that one oot.

I do that. That is the biggest reason I bought my JD A.Named it Harvey, after the man(my friend) who owned it for 40 years.

Some people lose all sanity at auctions. A 135
diesel for $6000 isn't out of line if it's in very
good condition. Power steering is only a nice option
if you have a loader. No loader and manual steering
is fine.
