Ford 6.0 diesel

Absolute junk till you spend 10,000.00 to 15,000.00 on the upgrades. They rate right up there with a 3126 Cat.

I've never owned one.

HOWEVER, a fellow who used to work for me is now in charge of maintaining a fleet of ambulances scattered across the State of Nebraska. He once told me when he took the job, they had all Fords with the 6.0 engine. He said they switched them all out for Chevies and cut their maintenance costs to less than half. He didn't go into specifics, just said the Ford 6.0 was a high maintenance engine.

You'll have to admit, though, ambulance use is one of the worst uses you can subject an engine to. They're either idling for long periods of time or running flat out down the road.

My 2 cents.

Personally, I'd rather own something cheap and easy to maintain...like an Italian sports car, or perhaps a helicopter. I generally like Fords, but I've worked on too many 6.0's to ever consider buying one.

I owned one that was chipped, traded it at 125K, never had an issue, consider myself one of the lucky ones.

If you have been hiding under a rock for the last 10 years or so, GOOGLE "Ford 6.0 LEMON:.

That motor will keep a mechanic in business alone. The 6.4 was a little better but still had issues, think the 6.7 is pretty good, but still isn't a cummins if looking for a diesel

Hi
ever heard the saying for Ford Of Fix Or Repair Daily, That is the motor this term refers to. Pay a few thousand more and buy a well maintained 7.3 truck, I got one here that was abused from a guy and the motors got 535000kms and still better than 6.0. there is a reason early 2003 diesels make more than late 03"s round me.
Had a guy come pay me for fixing a tractor last summer, got an 04 6.0 cheap Pile a crap was running outside my shop while he wrote a check, Dumped the egr right in my yard.
Run for the hills as fast as you can go. Chances are if a guys got a good one, Ford will pay a premium for it in 10 years to put it in their museum, it will be so rare!.
Regards Robert

There were good ones and bad ones. Need to find out what all has been done to the engine. As for finding a good/same condition truck with a 7.3, good luck. Either the rest of the truck is crap, or the owner wont part with it!

I must have got a good one got 198000 just a clutch and flywheel oil Breaks ball joints they are hard on ball joints only get about 800000 out of them

Neighbor had one. It was great up until about 80,000 miles. He dumped about $8000 into it the last 30,000 miles. Got so nobody even was willing to work on it. Finally found a dealer that would take it in on trade for something else.

Brother in law has an '06 6.0 Poorstroke...Ford wants $5,800 to make it more "reliable". He's got 82,000 on it and has broken down while idling in the Hardee's drive up window and also just sitting the the lot during work.....and numerous places in between.

He bought a Dakota to drive to work while pondering what to do with the Fraud...errrr..... Ford. His Ford tow bill has already exceeded the older Dakota's cost.

The 6.0 did have it's problems. I would recommend going to http://powerstrokehelp.com/ and reviewing all of the information there. You will have a better understanding of what you are getting into.

The maintenance is expensive like all diesels. You just have to factor in these costs into what you are willing to pay and then decide if you will take a gamble on that particular truck.

Depends on the year. The 03 and 04 are nothing but trouble. The 05, 06 & 07s are pretty good - for a diesel. That being said I wouldn't bother with a diesel unless all you are going to do is pull/haul nonstop with it. The mileage differential just isn't there and the cost of maintaining a diesel is so much higher than a gas.

10 years ago we had eight diesel 3/4 and 1 tons - we are now down to one and it only leaves the yard pulling a trailer with our truck driver at the wheel.

You got that right! I've got a 97 1 ton, SRW, crew cab, long bed. It has the 7.3 diesel. Engine and truck body are in excellent shape. 225,000 miles.

Not uncommon for people to approach me and want to buy it. Was at the gas station last Sat morning and had a guy ask if I would sell it. No way. Pulls anything I need to tow and gets 20 mpg not towing.

Jeremy, Boss is a ford man. Here at the car lot he wont even let us take 1 in on trade. It doesn't matter what year it is, they all seem to be trouble. If you could find 1 with less than 100000 miles you might be able to purchase Fords extended warentee, but when that runs out, what then???

We had on '04. No problems until around 95k miles, when the oil/exhaust cooler cracked. Around $3000 to fix it. Common problem now, wasn't well known until more trucks started getting near 100k miles. Coolant passages plug up and overheat, causing welds in the heat exchanger to crack, and dump coolant into the exhaust. Not good to see white smoke in your side mirror. Injectors are also a common problem that luckily I didn't experience, but fear of that expense is one of the reasons we decided to trade it off.

I was never impressed with the truck's power either. Seemed to suffer from bad turbo lag, made it tough to get out of situations when stuck in the snow, etc. Auto locking on the front hubs was giving us trouble too. We were very relieved to trade it in. Now drive a 2012 Laramie with the Cummins.

Oh good grief, really??!! You're gonna dig this horse up and beat it some more? Just google it man. The consensus us they were pretty much junk

Same here- have a '99 F350, 4WD super-cab w/6 speed manual. Nice shape (no road salt hereabouts), 240,000 and still going strong. No matter what happens to the truck, I'm gonna keep that 6 speed, even if I have to steal it at night from the impound yard. They're not making them anymore, and I can't understand why. Overdrive on top, granny on the bottom, handiest thing around for picking up hay bales.

Yeah I have a 903, and a 855, not in a dodge currently no, just have dodge gases, but have drove plenty, from work to buddy's, none have had problems yet, they have power strokes where I work also, a 6.0 and two 6.4s which the 6.0 is about ready to hit the happy trail because its best friend is the shop, the 6.4 is a little better. The ford 6.2 and 5.4 gas have been trouble free so far, but I'm no ford fan.
