I found an ih 1586 that has been sitting for 8 years but the guy
had it running last spring supposedly. It has duals and wheel
weights and has 3500 hours. He wants 4000 but I think he'll
take 3500 what do you guys think?

Seems to me like that is a lot of tractor for $3500!! What kind of shape are the tires in?? But that is just my opinion, I have NO experience with these tractors... Bryce

That cheap would always make me suspicious, especially if its not running. Believe I'd make the offer subject to getting it running. You're probably going to have to get it going, because if it is OK, he's only selling so cheap so he doesn't have to mess with it. Get your deal agreed on before you start it, so you don't end up with him saying "Gee, I didn't remember that it ran so strong- believe I'll need 5 grand for it, now that its running."

Thats what i thought im good with engines so i wouldnt mind rebuilding it but im scared about the rearend

I would absolutely get it running with the guy, then make an offer. Buying a machine like that and finding out that it needs major engine work would be a real PITA.

My family rebuilds/repairs engines for a living, and my thought was:

Hmmmm, if you could buy it for $3500 ish, then get it running and find out what it needs. You could probably fix up/repair anything in that engine and get it back to top performance for about another $1500-2000. SO when it is said and done, is a good running/working IH 1586 worth $6000?? I think so, especially if it has a rebuilt engine!!!

Yea that's what I thought. The problem is getting it home it's 280 miles away. What do you think it would cost to have it hauled

Boy I don't know!!??! We had to haul a Hitiachi Excavator about that size/weight and it was $200 for one way, for about 100 miles, but I would imagine that it could be completely different in your area! I am in North ID, and EVERYBODY has something to haul something else with!! :)

I would think that to do something like that around here would probably cost $500-700...

Who knows, I might be WAY off!! Look into it BEFORE you buy it!! :) Bryce

About $2500 to $3500 it big maybe over height even a lowboy and definitely over width so you have a lot of permit and maybe have to remove cab.

That's the voice of been there, done that. Seems to me, anything that's been sitting 8 years and mabey ran last spring... the ask is about 3500 too much.

280 miles get her running and drive it home. 18 MPH X10 hour day 180 miles next day you will be home. By the time you get her home you will know what kind of shape the motor and trans. and rear end are in.

If you do decide on it I believe there is a link on the left here about "hauling schedule" under Community. You might find someone from here that will haul it reasonable.

Cabs don't come off of an 86 series very easily. Sort of built on. I know they jack the tractor up and roll the rear end out to work on it when needed. They were delivered from the factory on low boys, you should be able to haul it the same way.

Well, interstate law is 13' 6", TractorData says that a 1586 IH is 116 inches tall, so that should be about 9' 6", plus 2 foot for the low boy, all in all the total load should be running under 12 feet... Seems about right to me, but like I said, I don;t have any experience with anything this big... Bryce

I think that is a lot of tractor to take on spec and he is asking a good bit of money for it under the circumstances. I paid a lot more than that for my 1586 but it starts and runs like a new tractor. As for hauling? Easy enough on a Loboy trailer. I paid just a tick over $300 to have it brought down from mid-Michigan. It was about 120-130 miles. Good tractors. If you have been sitting on an open station like a Farmall M it will take some getting used to. I drove mine across country yesterday 20 miles pulling an 8 row planter on end transport. AC, flotation seat, radio...pretty nice.

Used to haul the 86 series tractors on a tandem axle IH 1800 with a Schwarts roll back bed. 10.00 X 20 tires on the truck. Had to remove the exhaust pipe to clear the 14' shop doors but other than that we had no problem.

I would open the final drive drain plugs to see if there a pieces in either one. The planetary drives were know to sometimes give some problems. Also would be a good idea to inspect the hydraulic filter. Crack the engine oil drain plug and check if antifreeze comes out first. Engine need to be setting for about 24 hours without running to get a good sample.

Correction....STAA standard dimension is 13'6" high. More than that requires a permit and must be routed prior to hauling. Also must be escorted enroute. But, at 12'6" or less. it can even go through the Holland Tunnel!

I think for 3500 I'd roll the dice and drag it home. If you want it buy it, I've lost out by dragging my feet. I would crack the oil drain plug and check for water. Check hydraulic oil also. If that all seemed decent he would already have been paid!!
