Too much free electricity

Bolt hit this sixty foot tree about 50 yards from the house. Popped several circuit breakers and GFI outlets. Most of them reset, one fried but they did the job of protecting the small appliances they fed. Talk about making your hair stand on end, literally and figuratively.

Around here, it seems that oak trees get hit more often than pines. I don't know why.

years ago my sister and i were standing in a corner of a parking lot talking to our neighbor from across the street, when lightning struck the ground about 60 feet away, we all just about jumped out of our skins, forgot what we were talking about and decided to go inside. whew !!!

you were lucky we got hit last yr. same thing a tree 30' from the house. The first pix is the double trench from tree to corner of house, the second is the well blown apart, the third is the corner of the house and last is the pump control box in the cellar. $4000.00 in damage in all, it did some real strange things throughout the house a lamp had the cord blown apart and a hole in the sheetrock behind the tv. to mention a few. Insurance covered all fortunately.

My wife and I were sitting on the front porch when a tall pine got struck about 100 ft from us. We both yelled an headed for the door where we got lodged in it trying to be the first one in. Still makes us laugh.

FIL had one hit the transformer on the pole by his house about 15 years ago. Took out everything. It blew the telephone off the wall too. His insurance took care of everything except the 500 dollar deductible. For about 2 blocks around him there were TV's and computers fried.

Building our house in "97, a bolt hit the power line about 4 poles from the temporary trailer house we stayed in. Cooked the microwave, couple of fencers, plus the control panel on the bulk milk tank. I was in the basement trying to hold some tarps in place so the rain couldn"t get in. Everything turned white with that flash.

No one can comprehend the power of nature until you experience something like that! The summer before I finished school, I was working at a small manufacturing firm. One afternoon a thunderstorm knocked out the power. There was a large substation less than a quarter mile away, you know with the transformers the size of a car. We were standing there talking and watching it rain when lightening hit one of those! Impressive to say the least.

I've had pretty close strikes in the truck. First one I think I levitated from the milk truck floor into the passenger seat, it hit a power pole on top of a cut along the highway, dad said he washed mud off the side of the tank when we got to the plant.
Second one was north of Bluffton, IN, hit a power pole beside me, had to switch off all lights, radio, CB, luckily all worked when turned back on. Qualcomm even still worked (danggit!!!)
