Was working out in the barn when I realized that is was June 4th and anniversary of the Midway battle.
First major setback for the Japanese in WW2.

"Incredible Victory" by Walter Lord is an excellent account if you haven't read it. Based on interviews and recorded fact but reads like a story.

I"ve read many books on the subject and I think "Shattered Sword" is by far the best and most anylitical about Midway. I have read it twice because it is that good.

I"ve always thought that 1942 was a very bleak time for the US....until that very invigorating victory.

My grandfather was on the Yorktown when it was lost. He was an AP mechanic. Was being sent to the Lexington when it was lost. Then went to Pearl and later sent to the Franklin. Didn't know this until after he died. Found his travel log. He never talked much about the war.

John Parshal and Tony Tully - the authors of that book have a great website nabout the imperial japanese navy.
Combinedfleet.com
You can spend a few days there.

Looked it on wiki. Made for some good reading. Seemed straightforward and not glossed up.

First naval battle lost by the Japanese since 1863.
