Clothes washing machine(it is tractor related....sorta!)

My old Mums clothes washer quit this week. The repair man shook the drum, shook his head, told her it was not worth fixing and took £10 from her and ran as hard as he could! So yesterday my mechanic girl, Danna and me got it out into the yard and she removed the back to find the belt was thrown and the main bearing away in the drum/ barrel. She removed the old bearing shells and we phoned the electrical appliance store for a replacement.....£40 and you have to wait until Tuesday! I got a look at the bearing and thought it look like a Massey Ferguson clutch spigot bearing....so £3 later my Mum's washer is running again on genuine MF tractor parts,
There is no end to what you can do with tractor parts!.....Sam

Sam, that is a fine example of not just how versatile tractor parts can be, but how ingenious farm mechanics are. Kudos to you and Danna for 'wringing' some more life out of an old washer.

You now going to badge it with an MF? :D

That might be more useful information than you know. Those drum bearings seem to be made to self destruct in those things.

A man told me years ago that "They only make so many kinds of parts, it just depends upon how you put them together as to what they do." In this case the part is the bearing, and in one place it"s doing it"s job on a tractor, on another it"s a washing machine. One part, but way more than one use...., or taken a bit further, thousands of parts, but millions of uses....

Sam and Danna, excellent work. Even better finding a replacement MF bearing. Did you put a label on it "Repaired by genuine MF parts"?

Several years ago my Mom had a similar experience with her washing machine repair man. Repairs were estimated at half the cost of new machine. She called me and I found a small nail lodged in the water pump. Must have came from my Dad's pocket. Most difficult problem was emptying the water out of the washer so I could move it away from the wall to work on it.

Be sure to write down somewhere how you fixed it so you remember for next time. Or maybe I am the only one who forgets things.

Re bearings and numbers

We've got a Fiat Allis 10 dozer. In the parts manual it refers to ball and roller bearings by Fiat number - what you'd expect.

BUT at the back of the book is a table that translates those part numbers into standard bearing ones.

Very handy and the other machinery men around here haven't seen such for anything else.

Before my whirlpool washer was 2 years old, the bearing in the tansmission went out. The repair man said it was too expensive to fix. I got all my money back from the extended waranty plan I purchased and got to keep the machine.

I purchased a new machine and got to keep the 2 year old washer. I may use the old washer for dirty clothes and use it until it stops completely.

I couldn't help but laugh when I read your account! Here we call it Yankee Ingenuity, I'm sure you folks have a term for it also. What many people don't know, (and the parts people hope they never find out,) is that so many applications utilise the same part, in this instance, the bearing. And that the bearings all have numbers stamped on them so all you need is a cross-reference list.

I try to do that, but usually....I forget!!!

Samn40:

And when the motor on the washer goes out; are you going to connect the washer to the PTO shaft on the Tractor, and have a Tractor Powered Washer ?

It would be a "one-of-a-kind". LOL!
