running rich vs. normal

I know I would probably have better luck in the case forum. on my case 530 it has been running very rough after adding oil in the air filter oil cup so ive dumped most of it out and same result. it does run a little rich. my question is is it running rich causing it to run like this or is there something else wrong any ideas?

I have seen ignition problems cause the need for rich running. You need to do a complete diagnostics, make sure you have a good solid spark at each plug, then go from there.

the plugs were just cleaned and gapped. I will check the spark it has been running rich for the last 40 years my great grandpa had it set that way.

Recommend doing some diagnostics. Check quality of spark and condition of plugs. If the plugs are sooty, it would indicate too rich. If fouled, would indicate oil may have gotten too far into the intake from the air cleaner and fouled the plugs. Also have a look for any detectable vacuum leaks. Normal ideal mixture results in a clear exhaust stream, smooth running, and a light tan on the spark plugs.

hi nick167--- sometimes the mesh in oil bath will clog up-or- too much oil can pull into. simple test is to pull hose @ carb to see if cleaner is prob. good luck.

If it runs OK leaner, just change it, much better on the engine not putting that excess carbon in the oil.

Does the chock butterfly open all the way? Does it still run rich with the air cleaner disconnected from the carburetor? If yes for both, and you have good spark, I would try adjusting the carburetor.

Run a 195F stat. Most old machines have suffered the Bubba treatment with the stat being removed and tossed.
There is some perverse idea out there that is too hot is "bad", then colder is "better".
Cold engines suffer increased bore wear, increased lube oil dilution, fouled plugs and wasted fuel which exits the stack as HC and CO.
What viscosity is the air filter oil?
There must be a fill line on the oil cup somewhere.
It would not be the 1st time that the air intake system was plugged somewhere between the inlet and the exit of the filter. How much oily mud is stuck from bottom to top of the mesh?

I think it had a bad plug they will be changed. if this does not fix it I will check the air line. I filled the oil cup to the fill line it is low now as I dumped it had sae 30 and 10w30 in it. the air cleaner probably needs cleaned to it has not been cleaned in forever I could net get the keeper off so I did no more

I've seen the pipe section from the pre-cleaner to the oil cup almost completely blocked with years of crud. Add a dirt dauber nest that falls in there and you have a big restriction.
