Rust protection?

I am planning to buy my wife a new vehicle. Are there any rust proofing treatments that really work? We live in Michigan, salt country, and I see rusts on vehicles after 7 or 8 years.

There is no aftermarket treatment that is better than what most manufacturers already apply. The entire body is dipped in an electrochemical bath prior to painting.

Here in Oakland County, you have to worry about salt year-round. The road commission isn't satisfied with just salting in winter; they spread salt brine on the gravel roads in summer to keep the dust down. The resulting mud is not only highly corrosive, it also sticks like glue.

MarkB-MI is right. But you can fight it yourself. An example is bottoms of doors. where the outer skin laps over the inner, the seal breaks letting moisture in and you can't hope to seal it back up. You can clean rust and loose paint off, then spray WD-40, then aerosol chain lube. the WD-40 will penetrate and displace moisture. the chain lube will penetrate and then set up keeping moisture out. This is just one spot. renew annually.

A local Chevy dealer, one of the last of the old time family outfits, swears by annual rust proofing. I know people who buy from them and have the cars done. It does help from the looks of their cars. Not sure what brand, Rusty Jones I think, but doing it annually seems the key. Other than that very frequent washings of the underside help. Anything and everything helps. The biggest help would be the idiot drivers of the world learning to slow down so we could ditch the "Bare Roads Policy".

The other big help would be the vehicle makers doing real galvanizing, including the inside and outside of the frame. But that will never happen.

best i know is a local body shop melts grease and sprays the vechicle works great !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is really not anything better than the manufacture, and FREQUENT under body washes. Most car washes have a drive through with that.

good suggestions.
also, with new vehicle manufacturers doing a pretty good job with exterior panels and backing it up with a 'no rust' warranty,
don't let anything slide.
When I got my 07 GMC, within a year I could see orange spots on the chrome of the bumper.
They wiped right off, but I knew what the future would bring.
Showed the dealer and he replaced the bumper. (big job)
Glad he felt like I do, no rust means...no rust.
(7 years later...the replacement...no rust)
