New Holland Baler question

I have a Super 68 for a spare, rebuilt it about 30,000 bales ago, plunger, knotter, etc. It's in really good shape. I use it some so if my good baler self destructs for some reason I can hook on and go, This year it baled about 500 and missed 1 in a 100 or so, no big deal, seems like the twine is real crappy lately, usually a thick spot, then It got worse and misses on the right side. Spent last Sunday and went over all the adjustments and sharpened the knives and adj. the plunger etc. It will tear the string half off about 2 inches behind the knot, like it's getting caught or someting. Otherwise a perfect knot, will hang one on the bill hook once in a while, and I have the knife arm rubbing plenty snug and sharp. Left side hasn't missed in years, but this is really got me stumped. I have never not been able to make a baler tie. Looking for ideas, I'm out of things to check. thanks for your thoughts.

I have a S-68 and have found that it helps if I spray silicone lube on the twine discs and the fingers each time I bale. Yesterday I baled 170 and didn't miss one, but sometimes it will miss a bit more often. Usually when mine breaks the twine it is because the twine is caught further back, is your twine feeding freely on that side?

If it is breaking after it has tied the knot are you sure the twine fingers are adjusted correctly?

I had to make new brackets and new bushings where they pivot for mine.

I would get them adjusted and after a couple bales they were not returning to the correct position. I pulled the hay out of the chamber and found the bracket was only hanging by a small rusted area. it would move with my hand. The other side was not in good shape so I made them both.

Something to look at.

I do have them adj. to the book, but they are really sloppy loose, I'm thinking it has something to do with them, finally no hay tomorrow and suppose to be deathly hot and humid, I have it in the shop and plan to have another look tomorrow. Thank goodness my other baler(Massey Ferguson)has been working like a charm, thanks for your reply.

I blow it off before I put it away and I do lube the bill hook rollers and knife arm rollers with a shot of Mobile synthetic lube before I use it. Are the twine fingers sloppy loose on yours?? I have had this baler for 30 years and they have always been loose. I'm going to have another look tomorrow and see what I can see, take the twine fingers out and look for a sharp edge, thanks for your reply.

When you have a string cut/broken 2 inches from the knot on just the one side it is the tucker/twine fingers not working correctly. They either are nit retracting out of the needle slot or they are missing the twine. Even when they miss the twine most knotters will still tie the knot.

It sounds like yours are lose/worn in the brackets. I would bet that they are missing the twine at speed.

Grandpa always wanted to put WD40 on the twine disks before baling. Was ok for sisal twine.....but for the love of all things holy, don't do that with Plastic twine......youll be looking for the brake cleaner in short order!

I'm still running a 68, although that may be changing real soon (!!!), but 99% of my knotter problems disappeared when I switched to plastic twine. I mean DISAPPEARED. I think the more worn they are, the more they need consistent twine.
