Cloth strip between hood and gas tank?

On a WD, there is that woven type cloth strip that sits between the top of the hood and the gas tank (as well as a separate, thicker piece, under the gas tank, for that matter). Well mine has rotted away, and I have this old army surplus belt with busted brass hardware that seems to be a similar material (except this one is green, of course). Does this seem like a reasonable thing to cut to size and replace the strip with? Or does it not really need to be there?

Could try it and if/when it wears out, then you can
buy some.

YT sells black tank webbing (for Farmall F20's
anyway).

Gordon Rice carries a white tank webbing that we
bought for our Regular.

Deere offers a belt material in their radiator foam kits on the 30 40 and 50 series tractors, my local dealer has some leftover kits in the shop and has given me the belting until I could get some ordered for myself. chris

I have been using it for years without an issue.
