Broke a chuck of cast iron (I thought).

Took it to my neighbor who is a metal fabricator and he says it isn't cast but rather forged cast. Didn't know there was a difference. :>)

Anyway, he says he can glue 'er using stainless steel rod.

Hmmm, learn something new every day.

Some folks understand all that stuff completely. Most of us do not.

Touch it with a rod if it just melts away it's cast iron. There are some good rods for welding cast and also you can braze or silver solder ( which is the strongest of the two) go to your welding dealer and ask what they recommend They deal in this stuff everyday.

I'm thinking it is cast steel and not cast iron. Forging and casting are two methods of shaping metals so I'm unclear as to what "forged cast" is. Still tricky to weld so bring out the trained welders. I've used a stick rod on cast iron that you lay down about an inch at a time and wait in between to keep the part cool. Slow process but has been successful.

Be interesting to see what it was he welded, forged cast is something I know nothing about, but cast steel, you could weld it, I remember you had dragged out some of your welding tools for a loader bracket or something similar and posted here about it. In '09, while pulling the brillion cultipacker over 70 some odd acres, a bolt came out and the side arm broke in half, had seed down, needed to be rolled, what to do, quick little grind test, hmmm.. cast steel, from a total loss, where can I get a cultipacker to back in business in 2 hours.

Had a spindle on 2020 jd broke between bearings, a guy told us to use ss rod on it, worked great. It was broke and welded before my grandfather bought the tractor used. Learn something everyday!

I retired from a large chemical plant & we had company welders that could weld up the crack of dawn. There are rods for cast,& every metal out there (Hard for the public to get). I have seen them weld a bead on a alum. coke can! 20+ yrs. ago I took in blades off of my bush hog and they used carbide rods and welded the edges of the blades....never had to touch them since.
