fert. price

Talked to my fertilizer dealer a few weeks ago. IT seems that everyone did not want to buy fertilizer earlier this fall. A lot of the DRY fertilizer comes out of the gulf by barge. So without orders the fertilizer is still in the south and the barges came up empty to be able to haul grain back down. This has driven the local price of fertilizer up in the MID-west. Then the next shipments are going to have a higher barge transportation charge. So we are looking at fertilizer prices that will be flat to a little higher than last spring.

Corn is a little higher than that here. I have been thru this before with hay. I had a couple years where I cut it and left it. Regards the cost of fertilizer... expensive to buy, more expensive to leave out. I planted about 1000', 8 rows wide, with the augers not turning. You could tell at one week the difference. I couldn't stand it so I went out and side dressed it by hand.

I always prepay my N&K in December. It usually pays, this year urea was up $70 a ton by April and K was up some too but I don't think it was 25%. Around here if you don't fertilize you may cut the hay crop in half maybe more.
