Found this nest of eggs.....

....out in the woods while cleaning up. I
wondered what they were until Mom showed up a bit
later. I have no scientific name for this
critter, just "striped lizard."

I found one similar to that last year except it was gold colored. I looked it up and it was a coal skink. I carefully covered it back up. Only time I have ever seen one.

Photo was actually taken a few weeks ago, but hey, this is subtropical Louisiana so there may be a fresh clutch out there as we converse. There's billions of these things here; I like to watch 'em run across the back porch while I'm in my swing. I assume they eat insects, so I do them no harm (I covered the nest back up when I was done shooting).

A few months ago I found one on my back stoop, trying with little success to move away from me. As I wondered what its problem could be I saw the answer: a baby copperhead, about as big as a pencil, was stretched out on the stoop nearby, waiting for its venom to take effect on the lizard (skink?). Sorry, snake--no lunch for you!

As to size, these things can get up to about six inches long.

That's a pretty cool find. I used to find all kinds of interesting stuff when I was a youngin'. Too lazy to bend over and look underneath stuff anymore.

I found one last winter like that under my stack of round bales of hay. We have a lot of chicken snakes around here and I assumed it belonged to them. It was under the hay where no bird could have done the job.

I still get a thrill finding a salamander under a log. I leave some fallen limbs just for that reason. Caught several newts one spring in the pond along with a few odd insects.

I used to call my little sister a "stinking skink", having heard it from some of my little ax murderer friends, little suspecting that there actually was such a thing. Learn something new every day.
