Start problem Ford 3000 Diesel

My Ford 3000 diesel had not been used in about 3 month. When I started it it "ran wild" at a high rate of speed and neither the throttle nor the kill lever would work. The only way I could shut it down was to cut the fuel off. I followed the book's bleed instructions, ie, filter one, filter two then the "front bleed screw" on the Injection unit. If I spray starter fluid, the unit will start but runs only about 10-15 seconds. I am much appreciative of any advice anyone may offer. Thanks. Lew

It's something in your pump but I don't have the knowledge to tell you what.
Help otheres here help you though and at least tell them if you have the Simms style inline pump of the CAV style rotary style.

Hi, I believe the Ford 3000 had a CAV/DPA fuel
pump like a Perkins engine found in a Massey
Ferguson and it sounds like the fuel rail is
stuck.

Thanks so much for your response to my Ford 3000 Diesel start question yesterday. I'm sure the problem is me, but I can't relate the Ferguson video you recommended with my Ford 3000. I have attached hereto a picture of my unit and hope that will help. I appreciate your help.

PS: I did replace both fuel filters.[/img]

After referring to my Ford shop manual, it appears that my Ford 3000 Diesel has a Simms pump. And gosh, they are expensive. Is it reasonable to think one might be repaired or rebuilt? Or might it just need a good cleaning?

Also, since my last post, I find that fuel "gushes" out of the bleed plug with great force when the engine is turned; however, upon disconnecting ONE injectior line, no fuel flows at all when the engine is turned. (I first tried the engine connection end and then the pump end - same result, no fuel flows at all in this one line - assume the other two lines would be the same.

AM I READY TO HAUL IT TO A DEALER, OR IS THERE SOMETHING ELSE I CAN TRY? THANKS TO ANYONE WILLING TO OFFER SUGGESTIONS.

I just posted a problem with the electrical to my starter and while checking my wiring I removed the instrument cluster only to find something had chewed through some wiring to the instrument cluster, doesn't appear to have chewed on a wire back to my starter, but my point is; is it possible your cables have been chewed on and you're stuck in a high rpm with no way to cut the fuel either? I know it's a long shot but just throwing it out there.

The rack is stuck in the pump... if you take the side plate off you may be able to free it. Also see if it's got any oil in the cambox. Probably dry...

Wow, You Guys are Good! I took the side plate off as suggested and found the rack will only move about 1/8 inch. The plungers seem to work fine. Thank you so much. Now if you can give me some more advice about freeing the rack, I will be even more grateful. I've never done this before, so I am unsure about the amount of pressure to apply to the rack? Also, is it feasible to dismantle the features on the LEFT which seem to hold the left end of the rack rod? Again, thanks for all of your help to get me to this point and for any additional advice you may wish to offer.

Thanks Tx Jim, no I didn't change the oil. I did, however, add oil but it didn't take a lot. But, I will change the oil today just to be sure. Any more suggestions would be appreciated.

Does anyone know whether or not it would be advisible to use "Sea Foam" on the rack? I have heard alot of good things about that product, but have never used it.
