Barn Door Question

I want to replace the sliding door (16x10) with an overhead door. I am being told by the sales/installation company, I would have to go with a 15x8 because of the door opener and truss issues. I really don't want to lose the height because of equipment, and besides, I don't think it would look right either on this pole barn. What do you people think?

This is an older pole barn, the door is on the gable end, and the trusses are on 8' centers. I get the feeling he is trying to sell me a door he has in stock, but I don't know....Seems like an overhead door could be made to fit the space somehow with an opener.

How about a bi-fold door, they mount on the outside of the building and can any size you need, lots of the bigger buildings have them here now, neighbour (BTO) has a 60ft wide door on his new shop, i think it's 18ft high...

You can buy 'Low Clearance door track"
With it you lose 12", but you can also get a roll up doors that the whole thing can be above the height of the opening.

My neighbor put a roll up door on his pole barn a few years ago. It looks nice, but seems like it takes forever to open and close it.

Have you looked into a coiling rollup door. There is nothing hanging from rafters with these doors.

The 16 should not be a problem no matter what, The 8 is overkill. Should be able to do at least 9. I would look at bifold or single piece swing up. Will be more expensive, but if you need the height you need the height. You could not give me slidning doors on a building the I need to get into in the winter. I know, I have several that came with sliders when I bought this place. They will be gone soon.

You need to find a commercial door dealer. They have openers that mount beside the door and the door can hug the overhead tight. The wind up doors can in some cases be mounted higher than the truss and just roll up into about a 14 inch log over the door.

I have a 14' x 10' roll up door on my new shop. Takes just a little space in the overhead. Takes less than 10 seconds to roll it up or down and chain it into place using my arms and a loop of chain. Very little effort required either way. I have sliding doors on my other shop, they are a pain in the butt compared to the roll up door.

I encountered the same issue on my Morton building. A sliding door just cannot be made weather-tight, so I had the slider replaced with an insulated, overhead door. Yes, I lost about a foot of width, and about a foot of height. I didn't like losing the height, but I can live with it.

I left the sliding doors and track in place, and secured the doors in the open position. If needed, I can tear out the new, overhead door and go back to just the sliders.

Donno what their problem is. Just built a polebarn with two conventional roll up doors (garage doors), each is 16wide by 11high. No power to the building, so no openers possible. Not a problem. Installers adjusted coil springs up top so just light push gets them up, a light pull can get them down. The overhead inside is 12 feet 9 inches and there was plenty room overhead. Could have done it with the 9 inches.

Talk to another installer/vendor.

Guy I know has been making an old hog house into an extra garage/shop, gable roof he tied together 3 or4 ft. down and wrapped the ceiling with white tin. Walls aren't over 8 ft and he didn't want the overhead door track in the normal parallel to the floor position so he got a track somewhere that goes up at about a 45, he's got an opener up there. Looks nice, white tin in and out, new roof, new floor, didn't know a door track like that existed.

There is no reason the width has to be smaller unless your building is only 16 ft wide. As for the height you need just a little, 6 inches?maybe, more height on the ceiling than the door opening height. You must use a low clearance horizontal ceiling track which is a double track and they make special hinge/rollers for the top of the door. I have two doors with garage door openers and the ceiling is only 6 inches higher than the door opening. You have to be a little creative when installing the door opener consider the instructions just guidelines.

16' is not unusual but may cost more(being "non-Standard)..
The wider the door sections are, the more Stiffeners required (and use all you can).
Height is only limited by your building.
The Belt-Drive openers are the way to go if you want an opener..

Brother bought a 16 X 12 used door from the local COOP station after they had a new door installed with better insulation. He doesn't heat that building so didn't need the insulation.
