Outgoing Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman set a record for being the longest serving Governor in the history of Nebraska, having served 10 consecutive years. Don't know if that's a national record.

He was Lieutenant Governor when (then) Governor Mike Johanns was elected to the U.S. Senate. Heineman served the remaining two years of Johanns' term, then was re-elected to two four year terms on his own. This term, he was term-limited out.

Also, in 1987 when Kay Orr and Helen Boosalis ran against each other for governor of Nebraska, it was the first time in the history of the United Stated that two women ran against each other for the governorship of a state. (Kay Orr won and did a commendable job). Don't know if that's happened since.

Figured ya'll wouldn't be able to sleep tonight unless you knew this.

It's a Nebraska record but recently-deceased Mario Cuomo has him beat by serving as NY's governor for 12 years. That's the NY record, but probably not the national record either.

In Va. it's 1 term for 4 years and can run again after another 4 years. That was in our 1830 state constitution and stands today.

We did just break a state record that we are ashamed of. Former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell is the FIRST Va. Governor to be convicted and sentenced for a crime. He goes behind bars Feb. 9th. Then his wife gets hers later in that month.

William Milliken was governor of Michigan for 14 years and is the longest-serving governor in state history.
John Engler served for 12.

Governors in ILLINOIS usually serve two terms and then go to prison.... The new State slogan is "ILLINOIS,,,,,THE STATE OF CORRUPTION"

If he lives thru another term, cuckoo Jerry, CA will have 4 terms of 4 years each under his belt. But maybe CA doesn't count?

That is record no one in office should ever be allowed to set. There should be term limits on ALL gov. office holder of one maybe 2 over there whole life time as in no more carrier politicians.

Some wag said Illinois has a 3 term limit- first 2 are 4 years each, third is usually about 8 to 10. . .

As far as consecutive terms I think it's NYs Nelson Rockerfeller with 15 consecutive years as gov. If he hadn't been asked to serve as Fords VP he probably would have stayed in office till he died. When I was growing up I never knew that anyone else could be gov except "Rocky".

Former American Samoa Gov. Peter T. Coleman established a new standard for gubernatorial longevity in 1993 when he became the first U.S. governor whose service had spanned five decades. He was first appointed governor in 1956 and served until 1961.He also served from 1979 to 1985 and 1989 to 1993.

Gov. George Clinton of New York (1777-1795 and 1801-1804), Gov. Earl K. Long of Louisiana (1939-1940, 1948-1952, and 1956-1960), Gov. Cecil H. Underwood of West Virginia (1957-1961 and 1997-2001), Gov. James B. Hunt Jr. of North Carolina (1977-1981, 1981-1985, 1993-1997, and 1997-2001), and Gov. William Janklow of South Dakota (1979-1983, 1983-1987, 1995-1999, and 1999-present) had gubernatorial service spanning four decades. Gov. Clinton, New York's first governor, served a total of twenty-one years, by far the most years in office of any U.S. governor.

Governor Edwin Edwards of Louisiana served 12 years in the State House, then 10 years in the Big House.

Wow. Peter T. Coleman. He was in American
Samoa when I was part of a small US Navy crew (all officers and chiefs except for me at E-6, ET1)
who were flown from Hawaii to American Samoa to
install a communications system for them in
about 1960. My part of the work was to connect
up teletype converters to the old Navy
transmitters that were there, probably left
from World War Two although my memory is vague
on that. We worked directly with the governor
and his crew. I'm sure I shook his hand when
we arrived and were introduced.

American Samoa seemed like a pretty primitive
place to me. It was terribly humid all the
time. No air conditioning and hard to sleep
well. An hour after a shower and you could
again wipe salt off your skin.

Should Branstad of Iowa not seek re election he will beat this record by 2 years. He was just re-elected to another 4 year term last fall. Total years would be 23 at that point.

I personally like him because he had out state in the black when he left office the first time then they decided it was best to spend the savings on some new government program and ran us right back into the red. Don't always agree with him, but who can you always agree with....
