Cold in New York State

I have 2 different brands of infrared thermometers that you point and click..here in the sticks one shows -18°F and one shows -20°F which translates to -29°C for our Canadian friends. I have only seen it this cold in this part of New York once before in my life.....Glad I heat with wood...

It was -10F on my thermometer before the sunrise. The air is still, the steam vapors from chimneys can be seen as straight plumes, and there is a haze over the nearby city along the hudson river. I am thankful that my stove is lit, the even heat is coming off it, I've got plenty of dry split hardwood, enough to get me through this winter and 1/2 of the next at this point. I remember the correctional facility job site in Malone NY being beyond -20, closer to -30, somewhere in between, its a game changer for sure. Had to change my F150 oil into something more suited for the cold, the battery in it was also upgraded, and boy was that 5 spd stiff when it first fired up, needed a warm up. Last week that cold air mass moved in, but the wind made it so much worse, it feels much warmer today, being the air is still.

Has to be the still air, last week the wind and the cold air that moved in, it got to 56F in the garage downstairs, which is unheard of, stove took a good while to heat things up again, and this was just overnight, this morning in the same place it was 61F, and the last wood was placed in the stove around midnight. Good to hear its no trouble for you this morning !

Watertown, NY was reporting 21f below zero this morning. The weather girl stated it is normal temp for the city and surrounding area and I agree with her. It is cold outside and yet surprisingly comfortable if you are dressed for it.
No wind and that helps.

-22F overnight here just off NY's Tug Hill, and I'm sure it was colder on the Tug and at higher elevations. Not at all out of the ordinary for mid-January in northern NY.

At about 3AM I checked and it was -20F Right now at 9:40 am its -9. I got up a few times in the night to change the water in the pipes in the crawl space/cave. Nothing froze, good thing there was no wind.

Was down to -4 3 am or so, I'm just east of ACG guy, and west I believe of BillyNY, just like last winter, January was very cold, going threw the firewood now! Lol

A warm front is on the way. It was -14F yesterday morning in MN, it was +10F this morning. Hang in there.

Don't you just love it when you are dragging in the fire wood that you have sweated over. Look up and see a bedroom window open so "I can air out the bedroom"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Minus 32 in Fort Covington in the St Lawrence Valley, readings of -20 to -24 elsewhere in the surorounding area.

It was an almost balmy 13 when I headed to the barn this morning... 35 degrees warmer than yesterday morning.

Where are you from in Otsego County? I still have a place in Worcester. Lived there nearly 40 years. Hartwick area heading towards Cooperstown on Route 28 has had some of the coldest weather for Otsego that I've heard of. I've witnessed 32 below F once around 30 years ago.

I'm in northern Michigan now. A few miles from Otsego County Michigan and Otsego Lake, both named by New Yorkers after the New York places. 10 below F here this morning.

The coldest we had last winter here was -32. So far this winter the coldest was -24. Last night it was -20 at 3 am. and had warmed up to a balmy -10 by 7 am.

We were running somewhere between -20 and -17 here south of Black Lake, about 10 miles south of the Canadian border. But the air was dead still and that makes all the difference to me these days. I've seen -52F when I was living in Long Lake NY. That year we had more than 30 days in a row where the
high never got above 0F. I have to say the wind up here hurts me a lot more than the cold. I can take the cold, but the wind just cuts me to the bone. I look like a model from a 1940's Woolrich advertisement when I go out in that weather!

I went to Clarkson University (class of 81) in Potsdam NY. Saw -40 -42 on more then one occasion. Walked to class at -40 truck wouldn't even turn over with two batteries in it. One week never got above -10 even during the day.

(quoted from post at 09:49:28 01/14/15) Minus 32 in Fort Covington in the St Lawrence Valley, readings of -20 to -24 elsewhere in the surorounding area.
We can see the lights of Fort Covington from here (East of Martintown Ontario) I had -33C yesterday morning (-27F)

Gets nippy up there, doesn't it? Graduated from the same school 10 years behind you (BSME) and walked a mile and a half back to the Hill from downtown more than once in -40 or worse. Like Robert W. Service wrote, "when our eyes we'd close, the lashes froze, 'til sometimes we couldn't see"! Seemed like a good idea at the time, but not sure I'd want to do it now.
