Update on Migraines

I am taking it easier this week, and working 1/2 days. I am working to identify my schedule and diet so I can see if those are triggers. I have not been out of touch, like it was last week, but still some optical issues. I am limiting my travel to 1 hour from home.

I hope to get into Neurologist soon.

I hope you can get to the bottom of it soon. Never had them myself. Marilyn used to have migraines so bad I would take to the doctor for a 'knock out' shot. I would have to half carry her into the house after she got that shot.

I had those for over twenty years, and as I age I realize some of my triggers change. I take imitrex on onset of one or ginger power depends on how early I notice them. One thing I learned here of lately is poor sleeping. When I don't get a good night sleep it triggers one,90% of my happen when I wake up. Not sure how what direction I go yet but keep a good dairy for a month will help. Good luck

Did you carry the other half of her in also---My wife had migraines with her monthly curse, it was'nt good time for the kids and I during those 3-4 days. gobble

David,
Good luck with the neurologist. 15 years my neurologist said I was having mini strokes. Take an aspirin a day.

Recently I found out I wasn't having mini strokes, instead I was having silent migraines causing vision problems. Dr really doesn't know the cause. I think my silent migranes were triggered by stress.

I suffered with migraines for 8+ years. I took 4 years for the Drs. to get me on Maxalt MLT tablets. They would work if I caught the headache early enough. After about a year, I discovered that; if I took 2 Ibuprofen and the tablet together, it would stop the migraine most times. I was having 8 on 9 a month. Since I retired 3 1/2 years ago, I haven't had 8 migraines. FYI, the Maxalt pills did not work for me.

For the last 40 years, occasionally my eyes will become noticeably out of focus for a minute or two and over the next 5 - 10 minutes come back to normal. May happen twice a day, or every six months or so. No headache involved.

The only thing several eye specialists and doctors can come up with is a silent migraine issue of some sort. It happens at random, with no apparent trigger, and doesn't really affect my activities. I got so I ignored it years ago.

Don't rule out sleep apnea. My wife suffered with migraines her entire life and nobody could help her. Once she was diagnosed with the sleep apnea and started wearing the mask and getting some oxygen to her brain at night, the migraines stopped.

I've had "classic" migraines for 30+ years. Always a visual aura occurs about 15-20 mins prior. A squiggly vibrating blurry line sorta like looking at a mirror with a big crack across it. The best aid is Excedrin Migraine, it has Tylenol aspirin and caffeine. Won't stop it but will dull it. The worst ones made me puke and sit in the dark. As I age they get fewer and weaker. One trigger I have is black licorice and I love it. But I can't really pin them to any one thing or life event.

Friend of mine used to have them pretty regularly. He cut out soda's and went to decaf coffee. He's down to one every couple of years now. Caffene was his trigger.

Girl my wife works with said her doctor suggested vitamin B-2. I think that is Riboflavin. Kinda difficult to find by itself. Walgreens doesn't carry it, but Walmart does.

My wife is trying it.

I use to work with a guy that would have to go to the hospital and get the "knock out" shot.

It put him out of commission for days.

He traveled and it was a mess. Sometimes he was way away from home in a motel. Several times family memebers had to drive to neigbhoring states and haul him home.

They are real, not imaginary.

good luck.

Dave good luck with the migraines. I could count the times I had a headache on three fingers until one day I had realized I had always had a headache and did not know the difference. My vision was starting to be affected. I started getting what is called visual migraines, which had no pain, followed by massive light and sound sensitive migraines. Then my family Doc. and neurosurgeon both strongly suggested for me to stop driving commercially. Giving up my CDL was hard because I had been driving truck from the age of ten.
After three months of tests later, I remember my neurologist telling me that I either had TMIs. mini-strokes, or MS. I looked him in the eye and asked him. "Which one should I root for?" You could tell by his stare that he puzzled over the question but ethically could not answer. As things turned out it was MS...
Sorry "might I digress." The point I was headed for was for the migraines take mega doses of vitamin D

I had migrane issues 25 years ago. Couple of trips to the chiropractor and I have been good ever since. I know of another close friend after being to the neurologist many times was fixed by the chiropractor. I would suggest that you at least get checked by one.

Goose,
Went Dr told me I had silent migraines, I thought he was pulling my leg. Good thing we don't feel the pain of a real migraine. My first one I was under a lot of stress. Sometimes I go for months or even a year without one. Sometimes working on a very hot day will trigger one.

I just sit down, close my eyes and in about half hour things are fine with vision.
