BIG IH Sickle Mower!

A buddy is trying to pedal this mower to me, it is an IH, but it is big! I am trying to ID it, but don't have any pictures.. Would also like to know what it is worth!?

It is pull behind, has two wheels that are off set of each other. PTO drive, with hydraulic, 1 way cylinder to lift the mower. Has a large belt across the back, and no Pit Man Arm, that I could see at least.

Has a 9 foot sickle on it, and when in the "transport" position leans WAY over, not just up to about75 or 80 degrees like normal ones, this one goes all the way up, past 90, and back down to like 60 degrees? (thats from looking at it from the back)

Any idea as to what it is and what it is worth? He says that he has 2 or 3 knives for it, and it has two very nice car tires on it, they are fully useable...

That is most likely an IH 100 balanced head mower...trailer type. Excellent unit but head can be expensive to have repaired. I paid $85 for mine in good useable shape. Saw one sell for over $500 two weeks prior in untested condition. It is worth the risk at around $200. I would buy that if you have need of one. They are about as good as it gets in an old mower.

I sold a 3pt model like that last fall for $450. Buyer came up from Missoula to get it. Just talked to another guy last week that said he has seen them go for a lot more than that.

Did you go get those AC's? I see the ad wasn't up very long....

It is probably either a 100 or 1100, they are/were very popular in the Dakotas/MN. Tractorhouse may give you an idea on asking prices. The condition of the head (sickle drive box) makes or breaks the value. Most guys have gone to double 9' Rowse mowers or swing tongue hay conditioners, but a single 9 is still pretty useful.

It sounds like a 100 or 1100. Around this area, I have seen them go as high a 2k... They are a good mower as long as you don't have to ever back up!!! They are a major pain to back up even a few feet.. I always preferred a mounted mower for just that reason.

Oh no worries! This won't be a cash deal, this guy will NOT sell anything, but everything there if "for trade" he is a freak for little things, and he flipped out over that wood beam plow I got, so I just gave that to him, but then he gives me trade in value towards stuff that he has that I want.

Well, so he has that plow, which I am thinking is worth $150 or so, and is thinking that he wants just a little more, so at the most I might give him $50?

He has a soft spot for me though!!

Those balance heads would not hold up in the thick heavy mountain grass of 8000ft Gunnison Colorado.Guys went back to pitman machines or the NewHolland 'pitmanless' mower.

We are at 2200 feet here... Most of our hay is thicker at the bottom, but this next year I am going to have pure oats in that field, so I would think that it would be alright huh?? I had the thought though, I was planning on running it with the Farmall H, but it may not have enough power, and I wouldn't want to try to mow 5 acres with a Super M. Soo, I think for now I am going to stick with the JD No. 5 on the Super C or the H.... Should be just fine!

How long will it take me to knock out 5 acres of oats with a 7 footer? acre an hour?

My inlaws used to cut 300 acres yearly fourty years with 2 H farmalls and 7ft mowers. If they got behind they would put the 300 on a 3rd mower. They used "Interhollandeere" mowers.A IH semimount balance head frame,Deere crazywheel and a NH pittmanless 7' bar assembly/drive.They completely wore out two of them. Then went to a 9' haybine pulled by a 400.As to how long? 2-3 hours?

Bryce That mower is like the others have told you an IH 100 or 1100. They will bring $500-1000 around here depending on condition. The three point ones will easily break a $1000-1500.

Bryce, an H is a good match for a 9 foot mower. It has plenty of power, plus an H is easier to steer and more nimble than an M. I run an H with our 1100, and with everything adjusted and sharp, it will knock down about 2.5-3 acres per hour in third gear. With a narrow front tractor, you can cut square corners pretty easily too.
