24v to 12v starter

For years we have been using 12 volt batteries on 6 volt starters, what will happen if I hook 24 volts to a 12 volt starter?

I wonder if there is a high wattage industrial resistor that could be wired in series with the starter ? A 1/2 ohm or one ohm lets say. If you could soak up 8 or ten volts , it might work just fine....

I have hooked three 6 volt batteries in series for an ornery 70 hydro diesel that would not start and it whipped it over really good and started right off. I unhooked all other wiring and hooked them 12 volt while doing that.

Hello doorman,

12v jumping a 6 volts system has been done. Reason it worked not much to burn up except the starter or a volt meter. 24V to 12V will probably do the same, just make sure voltage sensitive components keep the smoke in. If you need more power to start a vehicle, just parallel 12 volts batteries, end of problem!

Yes, there is such a resistor. It's called a 4 ga battery cable, if your 6V starter is too frisky for its own good when on 12V.
Tames that low rpm shock right down by limiting the amps avalible to the starter.

used to use 24volt to the 526 cu in blown alcohol pro mod starter with rest of the car wired for 12 volt..... all from two 12 batteries in series
positive from first battery ran lights etc including solenoid and positive from second battery went to starter ONLY... worked GREAT!!
