Some Have Tried to Tell Me Different - Allis Chalmers

When my wife and I use to sell tractor books at shows some would try to tell me that there were only one publication of the Allis Chalmers Story by C.H. Wendel. I would tell them no there were more. Here's proof. First Edition on the left, 2nd in the middle, 3rd on the right. I wish I had a copy of each today but I don't. All of Wendel's books that I had I was lucky enough to have him autograph them for me and stupid me allowed the "Oliver Hart-Parr" I accidentally sold at a show... oh well!

Wendel's book titled "150 Years of IHC also had a special publication that came in Brown but only a few of his close friends got copies of that publication. There were not that many brown copies to my understanding on the IH book.

If you want to read a good book on AC,get a copy of Plow Peddler by Walt Buescher. He worked for AC from 1935 up until the end. He went from riveting levers for All Crop combines to being blockman for eastern Michigan and northern Ohio. Great history, insite and personal stories.

We have the first edition book. It is a good book but look elsewhere for production statistics and several of the pieces of equipment he said were built were actually just prototypes.

Jim can you tell me more about the IH book or can you post a picture of it? I only saw one when a man at Mt. Pleasant Ia show took me back to his trailer and showed it to me and then explained a little about it. He was a good friend of C.H. Wendel.

I met him once years ago, wish I had gotten some of my copies signed then.
I have most of the first editions but none of the special edition. Have two 1st edition(one still sealed)of American Gas Engines. I remember his articles in the Gas Eng Magazine.

The American Gas Engines is one book I don't have. Always wanted to get one but the price is up there now and I don't feel like spending that much. Maybe someday.

I knew Walt and his office partner "Abe" Lincoln when I worked for AC. Those two were the entire Marketing Department for AC.

As with all other ag equipment manufacturers, they did no marketing research to determine what the customers actually wanted and needed for that time period. They just designed and built products and put them at the dealers and hoped that they would sell.

I sometimes see the ihc book under 20 dollars on eBay would really like to get it. I didn't know there was an ac. Book would like it to.

My dad worked at the LaPorte,In. AC works . A lot of the men that worked there had farms but the company did not listen to the suggestions from the workers. They wouldn't listen to dealer that had suggestions on how to improve a michine that was all ready in use.

John My father owned an Ih dealership during mu school years. CH and dad were semi friends in that the two talked a lot along about time ih brought out the 560. seems there were several recalls and modifications. Somewhere in there the brown book was published. He sent the book by to dad telling him he had a few special ones made for his friends. Dad has been dead now for 15 years but I think that is pretty much the story on the brown books. Have no idea how many were printed. It is at my Paris home or I would post a photo. We spend most of our retired time here at the farm in Dover Tn.
