British tractors 1945-55

During WW2 British engineering factories had turn out millions of tons of material for the armed forces. At the end of the War they looked for new products to manufacture & sell.

Thousands of ex-service men returned and wanted a peaceful life farming a few acres. To meet their needs engineering factories started to produce small 2 wheel powered cultivators and small farm tractors. The designs were simple and often similar in style, some powered by large 2 cylinder motor cycle engines. Here are 3 makes that were only produced for a few years

The Kendal.

The OTA

The Singer was updated model of the OTA

By the mid-50' this type of tractors were obsolete following the launch of the Ferguson T-20; and the companies disappeared leaving few survivors to-day.

O/T slightly

Any information on LLoyd crawlers?

We nearly ended up with one but for a ship wreck

Never seen a Lloyds Dragon crawler. Very little information on Google, seems as though Lloyds were involved during WW2 in Bren Gun Carrier manufacture. I guess not many were made/sold

Very Interesting. I've always been a fan of British Iron. Had an XKE and Triumph MC.
Motorcycle engines are air cooled. British made twin cylinder BSA and Triumphs. So were
these tractors air cooled BSAs or Triumphs or something else?

The Kendall tractor had Norton twin air cooled engine - as fitted to motor bikes

Was the Singer in any way related to the Rootes Singer sports roadster that was built in the early
50s?

Yes - Singer Cars bought the tractor designs and built them for a short time.

If I recall most were 650 cc and around 45 hp. Fitting, all British bikes were good for
dirt racing.
