barn roofing on the cheap

Hello guys,

I would like to replace the leaking roof on a corn crib(currently rotten asphalt shingle).

The goal is not the prettiest barn, but just a practical matter of trying to save it.

What roofing system would be cheap? Just has to work for 10 years.

Thanks

Buddy and I just re-shingled a horse barn.. was only 11 squares. It was his frinds place and we wanted to help him out.. used three tap on it.. on a outbuilding... I was wondering why he didnt use metal.. easier and faster to lay.. however depending on who you are looks may be the reason he choose shingles. For me, my house,, shingles,, out buildings metal.. thats just me..how big is the shed??

I have a building that is...let me see...37 years since I built it. Been thru a couple of roofs. The last batch of rotten shingles I just covered with some corrugated panels from Lowes. They are almost like an asphalt material, rust in color, and have special fasteners and ridge caps you can get. I do not think it was expensive. Very quick to put up and has been leak proof for many years now. I did not want to put the time and money into another shingle roof. Building houses pigeons and they sit up there and pick the grit off the shingles. This works better.

I think you are talking about Ondura Roofing. It seems to hold up well. I have used it over old asphalt shingles.

If the plywood is still in good shape reshingle with a SHASTA WHITE three tab of decent quality. Dark shingles seem to have about half the life of white or light colored shingles. I'm 47 years old and have yet to replace a roof that I put on (except the few that had the entire roof removed by a storm) or helped put on that used white shingles. The house I helped my dad with in 1981 still looks like its only a few years old.

If the plywood is no good peel it off and put down some nailers and replace it with the cheapest tin you can find if all has to do is last 10 years.

Metal roofing would be the way to go. You can go with colored, or just plain galvanized which is a little cheaper, either one will last more than 10 years. You can put the metal over the old shingles and just use longer screws to go through the shingles and into the backing boards. I figure roughly $1000 will buy the metal to do your roof. You can order the metal roofing through Menards or your local lumberyard. Menards metal roofing is lower quality than the stuff I get from my supplier, but good enough to last more than 10 years.

Now I will only use 35 year shingles. If you cost average, shingles and metal, shingles is best for me. In 35 years, my insurance company will replace the shingles and I pay just the deductible. You may have have to shop around to find a company who wants to do that. Most want to depreciate your shingles and you get very little. You have to have good ventilation for shingles to work. In the past I used 25 year shingles and got all 25+ out of them. Many of my roofs, the hail took. I have 2 homes and 10 rentals, so I talking about many roofs, houses, garages, sheds, barns.

I'm not a fan of metal, wind will remove it and condensation is a major issue. A local jail only got about 30 years out their metal roof. Now they are looking at a major expense to remove it, repair the plywood under neath that is rotted out.

You only want 10 years, 20 year shingles will work. Bet you are going to want more than 10.

Metal on top of the shingles screwed down to GOOD sheeting underneath will stay on there and it won't drip with the shingles underneath it for insulation. If you have any holes clear through the shingles so you can see the sky above it will drip condensation through those holes.

old billboard canvas material held down with furring stripps, Mine is five years old and looks great for just cheap roof. I expect it to last another 5.

Don't think......I know that I will never put another shingle down; metal is new tech way to go. "seconds" are low cost too.
