H Farmall PTO......

I need to work on the shifter on the PTO on an H Farmall. It shifts sloppy and sometimes doesn't stop right away when you push the shift rod down. Something is worn or loose in the shift mechanism. And you don't need a PTO that doesn't stop instantly when you shift it out. I'd like to pull the PTO out of the rear end to work on it.

Is there anything to look for, or do you just unbolt the PTO unit from the rear end housing and pull it out? According to my manual, the PTO shaft just mates into another stub shaft inside the rear end. I'm assuming you just pull it out and nothing will fall apart inside the rear end.

Any words of wisdom?

Thanks in advance.

(quoted from post at 09:04:54 06/07/15) And park the nose of the tractor downhill so all the gear oil doesn't run out.

Good point!! There are several gallons of oil in there. That would make a mess!

I will add that the external shifter lever (strip of metal) has been known to break the weld at the pivot point. look at it. Grinding out the bad weld, and using a Mig gun multiple times to re attach it will work. cool it with a soaked rag each short weld to keep from ruining the seal. Jim

Six gallons of mess according to the owner's manual. That's a lot of "tipping the nose down hill". I would drain it and change the lube while your at it. Besides, you never really know just how much gear lube someon has put in there in the past. I drained an M once that had over 16 gallons in it. Tweleve is what is called for.

If you use a 3-4' pipe slid over the end of the PTO shaft to control it as you put it back in the rear end housing, life is much less stressful!

The level is not above the PTO shaft centerline. Thus putting the nose down about 16 to 18 inches will work well. Jim

If you put 2 or 3 threaded rods in the bolt holes and slip the assembly on them, the rods will support the weight while you line up the shaft. Cut the rods with a two inch difference in length to allow you to line up on one rod at a time.
