1955 Fergerson TO 35 -- I Purchased from Yesterday's Tractor new starter part # 4858MFGXL. This starter is supposed to replace original however, the Bendix drive does not retract back far enough
to clear flywheel ring gear. Yesterday Tractor will take back the starter, but has anyone figured out how to get the starter gear to retract further to clear ring gear ?

Noise was not coming from the failure of the starter gear retracting. It turned out to be coming from a small washer style ring at end of starter shaft--removed this superfluous free spinning ring and reinstalled started and the noise was gone.

Might take another look through the starter hole, make sure the flywheel gear is seated fully against the flange on the flywheel. Turn the engine through and check it all the way around. These were known to work loose.

Heard the first bunch of TO 20s had that problem but heard nothing bad with the TO 30s or TO 35s up till now about the ring working back.

Richard is correct. That problem was resolved during the TO-20 production. No TO-30's or 35's ever had that problem unless someone has replaced the flywheel with the earlier style.

i had that same problem on a freshly rebuilt starter on my TO35. Mine broke the Bendix gear a week after I bought it. I pulled the starter on a Friday morning and drove an hour to a place in Houston that rebuilds starters and alternators while you wait. Took it back home and it worked great but wouldn't disengage. Had to wait until the following Monday to take it back. Bendix was bad....had to wait two more days for them to get another one. Now it works perfectly.
