A bit of a departure from my usual posts about the Pacific war.
July 3rd 1940.
Curchill, faced with a terrible threat, takes a terrible but probably necessary action and sinks much of the French fleet in harbor.

(quoted from post at 10:49:35 07/03/15) When Patton first got to Morroco he fought against the French. France was not exactly on our side during WW2.

My oldest Uncle (R.I.P.) was in the 3rd Armored during the Liberation of Europe and all it took to set him off was to mention 'France, French or DeGaulle'........ 8)

I recently read what I think is the first installment of a trilogy biography of Churchill. It is titled the Last Lion and covers up to around 1938. He got really kicked around during the years between the wars, they called it "In the wilderness" because he held no position nor had any support from either the majority or the minority party. As soon as war broke out again, however , they got him back.

Sadly, a great many today do not know exactly how large a debt that is owed to Churchill... and he is seldom given the credit he deserved for what he did. If you dig deeper into that one story alone you'll find that most of his own cabinet was opposed to sinking the French fleet... and he more or less bludgeoned them into going along with the plan. Many in your country today talk about how the US won the war... but had it not been for WSC, there would have been no war left to win nor any freedom for anyone.

Another good example was the Gallipoli campaign. It was a good plan, sound both strategically and tactically. If the French admiral in charge had done his duty at the start it could have been carried out with minimal loss of life and suffering. Instead he backed out and delayed for about six weeks giving the Turks plenty of time to build defenses resulting in hundreds of thousands of Tommy and Anzac casualties. Churchill wore the blame for it for many years after.
