Backhoe hydraulic cylinder

I have a Fordson Power Major diesel w/ Sherman backhoe. My question is: Can I install the bucket cylinder(double acting) backwards with the rod facing away from the bucket? I need to replace existing cyl. with new.

You can mount it to where the barrel moves and the ram is stationary but then you will need much longer hoses as the hose will have to change length as the cylinder extends. This is why most cylinders usually have the barrel stationary, the hose length does not change.

Thanks for the reply J.D. I see what you mean by longer hoses. The closest I can come to a replacement cyl. comes the opposite of the original cyl. and I would think the cost of having the original rebuilt would exceed the cost of new. I believe it needs a new rod(chrome chipped), and new packings and seals and I don't know what the cylinder looks like inside. The seal leaks and cannot be tightened any more.

If there is an adjustment/ packing gland on the rod seal it means the cylinder uses chevron style packing -vs- the newer lip style polypacks. That said, you do not have to disassemble the cylinder to reseal just the rod. All you need to do is take the adjustment piece loose, and dig the old packing rings out. Once you've got them out, get your local hydraulic shop to get you a replacement set.

Going back in you take the new rings and cut them at a double angle, meaning angled top to bottom and left to right. Do them just like you'd do piston rings and stagger the cuts as you install them. Once you've got all the rings in tighten the adjustment nut (packing gland)just past snug. Move the cylinder in and out a few times and tighten a bit more if it leaks.

The chevron style packing has a relatively high tolerance for imperfections in the rod because it has multiple sealing surfaces -vs- the single sealing surface of a polypack type seal. In other words you shouldn't need to change the rod to obtain an acceptable seal for a relatively long period of time.

Thanks for the reply NCWayne. This cylinder has a spanner type adjustment so it probably has chevron type packing. You said the chevron style packing has somewhat high tolerance of imperfections in the rod. Does this include very small chips in the chrome? If so I may just re-build this cylinder. If I buy a new cylinder(welded) I would have to cut off the fixed end tube and weld a block in its place to get it in at the top with the pin hole about 2in. farther away. Since I am 71 I only need it until I'm 90(Haha).
About cutting the new rings, I'm not sure what you are saying there, but I will know when I disassemble the cylinder.
This Fordson tractor is about 1961 and I assume the Sherman backhoe cylinders are original. I use this TLB on our small farm and it has done very well for its age. We keep it in a shed and use it part time.
