rough lawn caused by worms?

My mom's yard is so rough the push mower bounces all over, tried rolling the yard this spring which helped slightly but still too rough. I've noticed it getting rougher the past few years. Neighbor suggested I get some grub killer, said it would kill the worms that he swears is making the lawn so rough. Anyone else heard of this?

The grubs are feeding on the roots. Moles tunnel thru the yard to eat the grubs. Get rid of the grubs and the moles will leave. I have the same problem!

Keep rolling. Wait for rain and roll it wet. It took me several years with a heavy roller to smooth out my lawn. If you roll it dry you wont accomplish much. Earth worms aerate your lawn so i would be hesitant to kill them.

Down here in south jersey the sand box, I have a lot of ants. They can really build some big mounds. Also some moles.

The ground was wet this spring when I rolled, in fact I had a hard time getting a break between showers to get the rolling done. I always thought worms were a sign of good soil so I too am hesitant on killing them.

I mow our neighbor's lawn using her garden tractor. It gets lots of dead spots which I suspect is caused by grubs and is VERY rough. She has a lawn service fertilize it but they don't use an insecticide which is what it really needs. Don't know if grubs make it rougher.

Probably the Moles. I have Grubs big time but lawn isn't rough, just St. Augustine dies off and leaves brown spots. Grove love SA roots. Could poison them and get rid of the spots but I breath the air when mowing and don't want to be breathing poison that I put on the worms. So they stay. Besides, when the June bugs hatch they feed lots of nocturnal critters around the night lights.

It's night crawlers up this way that leave their castings all over the lawns. Some spots actually get muddy after a rain. I used to pick them for bait and it never hurt the population.

When I lived in Orlando I had the mole crickets in my SA grass. I had a very clever Brittany at the time he got to cruising the yard and stuffing his nose in the grass. I figured he had a cricket located. I would get down on my knees and dig a little and tell him "Cricket, Cricket" And he started digging and got it. From then on we had morning cricket patrol and I know he dug up more than 100 one summer.

jw,

That is not what I had experienced. Grub killer, sonic sticks, repellant applied by professionals, spring-tine traps...nothing.

Used the trap mole eliminator, got 12 or arguably 13 moles in one season. Got 5 this year so far. We are talking a few acres, maybe 2.

I have the satisfaction of knowing the mole population is being reduced by evidence of their body in the trap.

Grub killer may work, but I did not see the direct results of it.

I got worms in my grass fields, skunks come along and dig
them up, holes 2 in. dia. and 2 ins. deep. Then it rained
and the skunks came after the grubs. The guy cutting the hay
said I have some weird crop circles. some pics
