12 volt starter solenoid

Just wanted to let everyone know, the starter solenoids at tractor supply for n ford tractors are not Insulated Operating Coils.
They say they will work on older fords but they are grounded though the mounting base so the starter button cant be used.

Something like that could work, just not worth the time. napa has ST542 in stock for less than 20 bucks

The wrong solenoid is more of a safety thing. If you were to replace yours with the one from tractor supply that says its the same and wire it the same as your old one
as soon as you turn the key on it will start cranking. It wont matter if the tractor is in gear or weather you are on the tractor it will start. Just don't want
someone to get hurt or killed just because tsc supplier got it wrong

If you replaced the 8N solenoid with the one from Tractor Supply that has one side of the activating coil grounded through the mounting base, the other side of coil (small post on top) would ground through the start button by the gear shift.

On factory wired 8N there is no activating connection from switch to solenoid, so when you turn on the key nothing will happen at the starter.

With both sides of the solenoid grounded when you press the start button there is no power supplied to solenoid so nothing will happen.

I agree with you, rvirgil.

NO safety hazard, but it ain't gonna start, either.

There was another, similar thread a while back where someone else also thought using a typical "fender mount" solenoid would make it engage as soon as the battery was connected.

Uh, uh, ain't gonna happen.
