OT TOWING A JEEP BEHIND A MOTOR HOME

I have 8 tractors----Have a 1998 Jeep Wrangler to be used for a tow vehicle behind the motorhome.
It is a manual 5 speed. The BOOK says to put the transfer case into NEUTRAL and the transmission into GEAR. Doesn't say which of the 5 gears--and I would have thought the transmission would also be in NEUTRAL.
Any of you folks have experience with this??????????
thank you

I don't know about the gears ? Don't know why they would not want both in neutral ?
I do know that you have to unlock the steering column. Old boss towed his with it locked awhile and worn the front tires off of it ! LOL.

If the transfer case is in neutral and engine off, it won't matter what gear the 5 speed is in, the output or input shaft of the 5 speed will not be turning.

I have never towed anything like that so I know nothing. It seems to me you would be better off to get a 2 thousand dollar trailer to haul it on, you will do that much damage to it over time, Just my thought.

With the Jeep engine NOT running, the transmission input shaft and lower countershaft are not turning and throwing oil up onto the output shaft.

They want the tranny in ANY gear so the tranny output shaft doesn't try to drag along with the out-of-gear transfer case and wear the various gears that idle on that (upper) output shaft that are not being oiled at all during towing.

1) Tow Bars are unreliable in safety!
2) I have seen them stolen right off the vehicles before. All it takes is a wrench.
3) If memory serves... I think some states have outlawed them!

Used to work for a Tool Rental Company that quit using them for the above reasons.

I see a lot of jeeps being towed. It's always good to get somewhere, and have a vehicle to drive. I tow my 08 Ford Edge, which is a automatic Ford says it can be towed. Do you have a breaking system? I am adding a Brake Buddy this time out. I never had a problem stopping, but now I know I wouldn't. Stan

My BIL has a 40 ft motor home. He too is adding brakes to his jeep. On his way from Indiana to Florida he has to go through mountains. He keeps one eye on the road and one eye on his air brake air pressure. One winter he had air pressure problems in the mountains. He thinks the humidity was just right to cause a freezing problem.

Blue Ox is a very reliable tow bar used by almost all MotorHome people who need transportation when they get parked.

I tow a Chevy Cobalt (two wheel drive with auto transmission) with all wheels on the ground. The owner's manual recommends this over towing with a dolly. Max 60 MPH though.

I also use a Brake Buddy as a supplemental brake system as well as a break away protection. I cannot imagine this ever coming into play 'cause the tow bar and both safety cables would need to bust for the toad to get away from us.
