Ford 3000 diesel not turning over

Thought someone might have seen this behavior before and can provide input.
My 3 cylinder diesel quit and the engine was hot. I let it cool down and tried to restart but it will not turn. Oil level is good. I pulled the injectors, put in lubricant. Also tried pulling the tractor in top gear, but wheels would not turn. I can pull it is neutral so not a transmission issue.
When trying to start it, the fan rotates 2-3 degrees on each start. So, the engine is slowly turning, but it seems something is stopping it from turning over.
Any ideas?

probably got hot enough to damage pistons or bearings. aluminum pistons can displace metal & swell or 'galled' sp] in the bore.

so with injectors out still hard to rotate, and it DID get hot?

I think I'd look at pistons and bearings.

I assume something is locked up inside. I did not know if there is a safety switch that might have tripped (that would be the easy way out). I will have to start pulling the engine apart. This is my first engine repair, so I am a bit reluctant to start disassembling it. But nothing else has worked, so it seems to be the next logical step.

t might be hydra locked( coolant in the combustion chamber)Pull the injectors and try spinning it over.. see if coolant blows out the injector holes

Yes, I pulled the injectors to see if it was a compression problem. With the injectors removed, it would not turn.

Sounds like you may have a spun bearing on the crankshaft. The heating is one of the symptoms and the hard to crank is another. You are not hydro locked if it still won't turn with the injectors removed. You will need to remove the engine , separate the engine from the tranny, and do a complete rebuild. Happy farming.

If it won't turn over with the injectors removed, then something internally has locked/seized up.Was the engine running at high rpm,or just idling? What was the oil pressure when it stopped? The EASY stuff should be checked first:If it died idling, loosen the fan belt and see if it turns over. Also it is possible your injection pump locked up.You may want to pull the pan and look at rod bearings. One that has spun, and therefore seized, would be blue and discolored. You will have do a process of elimination until you find the cause.Good luck.Mark

Engine was running when it started to act up. It was at idle when it quit. Not sure about the oil pressure. I did loosen the fan belt to make sure there was nothing in the path that was locking it up. Rod bearings sound like the next logical step to check. Thanks for that advice.

Id drain a little oil and look at it,then cut the oil filter open.

I was wondering if there could be a blockage that caused a reduction in oil flow. That is something I will need to check before trying to get it running.

If you do pull the pan ,also look up at the cylinder walls, and check for scoring. Was the radiator boiling over? That could cause pistons to seize.Mark
