Missouri Floods lots of closed road

It is not just me that is having trouble in Missouri. A friend called and he told me that there are over 400 roads closed in Missouri right now due to high water. At Badnell dam they have ALL the flood gates open and the lake level is still coming up and many boat docks are close to being under water due to high lake levels. He said they can not walk out to there boat because the ramp is more then a foot under water. Record rain fall falls for this time of year

Parts of I-44 are closed as well, in Laclede and Phelps counties at the Gasconade river bridges. I believe 6 or 7 people died in low water crossings up the road from me in Pulaski County. I have seen worse where I live, but not much. I went out earlier and noticed I had some water in my shop building, but not really surprised and looks like it just got up higher than the pad and ran in under the bottom plate, which is no big deal, just thankful I have no other real damage that I am aware other than some downed fences down along the creek bottom. i have no livestock now, so fences can wait until it dries up if I can just drag them over out of the roadway for now.

To a flatlander like me though, just driving the backroads down there,it looks like some of those high water markers are a long ways up the hills. Can't be a unique situation if they knew to put them up there in the first place. Not trying to take away from the severity of the disaster, just an observation.

Years ago when I was still driving dump truck in the area we redid part of Hwy 133 due to the fact it would flood often. Funny thing is now is that parts of I44 are closed due to flooding and it is from the same river that we raised 133 to keep it out of water

Just think what could happen if the dam where to get to the point water was flowing over the top of it might be one heck of a big mess and or maybe a dam that would not hold up

What are some of the rainfall totals so far? About 2 months ago parts of SC, mostly center of state, got 2 feet total. Lots of small dams broken, some of them housing development dams that were 50 or so years old. The Governor said it was a 1,000 year flood, but then no one was around to keep records then. MO is not in a good situation now, hope the best for everyone. BTW, I wasn't in the 2 feet rainfall zone, but got plenty of water anyway.

I recall when that highway was redone, and as a matter of fact I drive that road almost daily now (Hwy 17 to 133 through Richland to I-44 to Lebanon). That straight stretch of Hwy 133 is a classic speed trap and I know I have been pulled over 3 or 4 times over the years (twice in a year). Closed for the holidays this week, so I am not having to try to get there this week.

Here are some of the rainfall totals as of this morning.....100 miles south of Kansas City I had 5.20" with 1" of snow to finish things up..This reminds me of Dec 1982 when south central MO and most of Arkansas had 10" rains that washed out major bridges..We were at my MIL's in West Plains,MO for Christmas 1982...It was 75 degrees on Christmas eve with storm warnings.....A year later in 1983 at West Plains,MO it was -18 degrees on Christmas eve.....What a change..

Cassville,MO 13.60"
Springfield,MO 10.12"
Lebanon,MO 10.50"
Monett,MO 10.50"
Rolla,MO 11.03"
Purdy,MO 10.30"
Shell Knob,MO 10.12"
Joplin,MO 9.25"
Wilburton,OK 11.12"
Muskogee,OK 11.00"
Viney,AR 11.69"
Decatur,AR 11.19"
Siloam Springs,AR 10.86"
Belle Vista,AR 10.51"
Springdale,AR 10.25"

I'm sure that some places had more than these did..

I could not recall the year, but do remember the storms and 82 sounds correct. I was also at my MIL's for Christmas eve, and we had a hail storm which damaged both vehicles sitting in the driveway that evening. Just sticks in the mind with hail in MO on Christmas eve.

Sheeesh - no way it can drain away fast enough with those kinds of rainfall amounts.

Hope everyone comes through it safely and with homes intact.

A lot of what didn't fall here came through here in that flood. The Governor didn't understand the term. It has nothing to do with recorded rainfall but is a term for drainage design parameters. It is the percentage of chance that a certain amount of rain would fall in a certain amount of time.

A train was washed off the track at Neosho in southwest Missouri. Noel Missouri was pretty much closed off completely. Lots of property damage all around. Our road was closed for a while but it is more due to the flash flooding and didn't last like the river flooding will.

We didn't get as much rain as Missouri got but we got over 7". Just before dark I had over 100 acres under water. When all the water from MO gets here it will likely be double that. That's a major flood but no where near a record.

That 10.5 inches in Lebanon is what causes me problem since the Dry Glaize creek starts in Lebanon. I have seen that creek go up when I have not seen a drop of rain but Lebanon gets rain

(quoted from post at 15:22:05 12/28/15) Bagnell is releasing ~100,000 cubic feet a minuts and still not keeping up.
104,000 Cubic Feet per SECOND, that's over six million cubic feet per minute. That's enough to cover 138 acres in a foot of water every minute. Or enough water to cover a square mile in 13 feet of water in an hour. To put it in perspective.

Back in the 90's when I drove truck cross country, Missouri was called State of Misery by the out of state truckers that got to meet the cops there.

Yep in 82 there was a big flood. That was the biggest that I remember. Just east of Springfield they got 20" of rain in about 24 hours. Dad lost a combine and a tractor in that flood. The next biggest that I've seen was in 2011 but it lacked 8' getting to the water mark set in 82. My grandad made a mark from the flood in 1917. I think that flood would make this one look like a spring shower.

The 1937 flood in the Ohio valley was pretty rough, listening to what my Grandparents said.

Old,

I looked up the information on the dam, it is designed to be topped in places, should be fine.

Old and Ron-MO,

Shoot this is a small world. My daughter and husband have a 40+ acre place just NE of the 133 and I44 intersection. Their drive way is the 1st one East of the crappy truck stop. We visit there once a year. Being as I come south through Camdenton and go through Lebonon with the 5th wheel trailer, I am probably just a cat's wisker away from both of you guys. I was totally blown away to see the old Gasconade bridge (just a bit south of the I44 bridge)closed off last summer, meanwhile some really crappy swinging suspension bridges in a state park allowed PU trucks to cross. With dozens of wires in each suspension cable broken and badly frayed, I was very concerned about even walking across. But if the I44 bridge over the Gasconade is under water, then the old iron truss bridge next to it is probably in serious trouble. As to this weather event, daughter's roof decided to leak badly, so I recommended covering it with tarps and holding them down with old tires. Now, if that ain't red neck! They sent me the picture of the roof, tarps, and 24 tires. Sure enough, I could have given them more tires, but getting them there would be impossible. They shut off electricity in the north side of the house because of all the water pooling up in the ceiling light fixtures and ceiling fans. They were concerned about possible electrical shorts causing fire. I guess I taught her something that stuck when needed.

I'm wishing all you folks in that area the best of luck in getting your homes and animals back into safe conditions. Above all, stay safe!

My wife travels that road daily. Many of her co-workers have been pulled over and ticketed. They're hoping at least some good will come from the flooding and those MHP guys will be tied up doing something else for a few days.

Shoot if they need more tires just let me know I have too many laying around. If you drive Hwy 5 the old one that is since there is now a new one you where with in 3 miles of my place since if you know where the Camdenton airport is then yep 3 miles form my place.

Ya now days the MHP seem to have nothing better to do then pull people over for some of the stupid little things but if you watch them they are not likely to use there turn signals or run with there head lights on in the rain etc. I hate it when I see a cop breaking the laws they are enforcing

I apparently didn't quote correctly, this was supposed to be in reply to Ron-MO regarding hwy 133. Maybe it makes more sense now.

Learned to fly at the Camdenton Airport about 40 years ago when Lionel Smith was the FBO there. Life changes prevented me from getting the license but had a lot of fun learning. Haven't gone all that far, live just NW of Lebanon now.

So that means your probably less then 30 miles form me. I buy my Horse feed at the Lebanon MFA. I worked at Tracker Marine from 1986 to 1992. Also worked at Independent Stave for a while and a couple other places in Lebanon. I live all of 3 miles from the Camdenton airport

I worked at Electrovert for 5 years, 80 to 85. My wife worked there from 79 to 09'. Several friends in the area, one lives out at Tunnel Dam. Been through tornadoes, ice storms, lots of snow, seen houses on the lake flooded, seen the lake so low I've walked across coves on dry ground, just don't ever remember seeing this much water in the area.

I got lucky today getting thru I-44 before it closed. I knew the Gasconade would be a bad spot, and when I came through it was up to the Eastbound lane and over the outer road. By the time I got home they had closed it down.

I have lived in this area since July of 1980 so you have been with in 3-4 miles of me many times. You may even know a few people I know or knew like a Doug Gregory or a Ken Lonnie. Both where welders at Electrovert. In 2003 when Camdenton got hit by the tornado's I was hit by them. In 2007 we had that bad ice storm that knocked out power for a week. But this year has taken the cake and seen more floods in 2015 then I have in the 35.5 plus years I have lived here

Been a long time since I have driven I44 between say the 133 exit and Lebanon. But yes did know that area well back in the early 2000s when I was still driving dump truck in the area. Helped build a good ,many roads in the area. Hwy 133 improvement the bridge going for Camdenton toward Mack Creek on Hwy 54 and the Grand Gladze bridge in Osage beach and even did some work at Fort lost in the woods with my 1963 Diamond-T dump truck

I remember Kenny, went through the 07' ice storm, 6 days without power. Drove up 5 the morning after the tornado went through. I can tell by the forums that people aren't understanding how devastating this situation is. I've been around the area over 40 years but I know people that's been here over 80 years and everyone's talking about the water. I know a woman out by Sleeper that is 104 this year and I think I might try to call her and see if she remembers anything like this.

Ken still has a Cat 950 loader on my place. Been here for over a decade now and not sure what he is going to do with it. Doug died in 1992 from cancer from being in Nam. Agent orange got him. The tornado of 2003 took out a good many trees on my place and I had to use that 950 cat just to get out of my driveway and up to my parents place. Need to do fence work but still to wet to even think about it

My wife remembered both names, she worked in accounting. Lost a friend or two myself to agent orange. My neighbor around the corner has a lot of his fence along the road down. He lives on 10 acres and I saw most of his driveway has washed down his hill into his field. In years past I've went down with my 8n and put it back but I've got my hydraulics scattered all over the shop waiting to buy parts. I'd like to say I'd run up and help you with the fence when it dries up but I've got a form of muscular dystrophy and it's been a bad couple of years. I'm afraid my fence building days are behind me. I've officially become one of those people my dad used to complain about when he said, "He's so slow you have to drive stakes to see if he's moving!"

I may have some parts for your tractor up here. I have a parts 8N and a parts 2N. I to am disabled but can still do a few things it just takes me a week to do what I did in a day years ago

It's good to know there may be some parts close to me. I may try to get a hold of you once this mess clears up around here. As long as my hydraulic cylinder will hone I'm okay on hard parts except I want to change to an NAA piston.

Yep NAA piston is the way to go. I buy a lot of parts form the Tractor Barn in Republic and if you need there number send me an e-mail. I have rebuilt a few of the 8N hyd set ups over the years.

That project is unfortunately on hold until the shop warms up some. I've got Tractor Barns card in my wallet. I'm hoping we get some halfway warm weather so I can finish this up before we get much snow. I've found the old snow shovel doesn't seem to fit my hands very good these days and really need that tractor going to plow snow with.

Years ago I built a 8.5 foot wide V plow that fits my 841 that has a heavy duty loader on it. I have not had to use it in 3 plus years but when I need it the thing sure comes in handy

I wish I had a front blade for my 8N. They seem to be rare as hen's teeth and look like they might be a pill to mount, but I'd still like to have one. I've got mostly asphalt where I live now and with my MD problem I get around VERY poorly on snow and ice so I try to keep the asphalt clean so I can get around better.

Sounds like you need a good old front end loader with a simple V plow like I have. I built the one I have and was asked why I went with a V plow and I told people with a V plow it could drive a straight line but an angle blade you can not do so

plows work really well and I wished I'd have had one at the airport those many years ago. The problem I have now is that my drive comes off the road and goes a hundred feet or so and then goes between the end of my house on one side and my detached garage on the other with my shop another fifty feet back. So I plow down the driveway and off to one side of my shop and pile it in the back acre. So I'd still have to have the back blade to do between the buildings. I've thought about a loader but I think with my hands what they are I'll have to trade up to something a little newer with power steering.

o you happen to have a picture so I could see how you fabricated your blade?

This V plow mounts to the loader bucket. Low edge is a U shaped piece that fits the cutting edge and the upper has a pin hook up. Send me an e-mail and I'll send you a couple pictures.
