Now how about postive buying experiences

I have had good luck several times.

Bought my first truck. Drove it home about 50 miles. Checking it over I could catch what oil came out of the transmission in the palm of one hand! I filled it and hoped for the best. It never bothered. (Clark 5 speed in F600)

I bought my first combine, an early Gleaner E, at auction for $800. I brought it home and spent about that much more on it, mostly in belts. I used it for several years.

I bought a low time, very beat up Gleaner K2 from a dealer. I fixed it up, and it was likewise a good, dependable machine.

I traded the K2, with an out of state dealer, for an F2, sight unseen! When it came it was also a fixer upper. The dealer did supply most of the parts. Another good machine.

I was looking for a 55 HP tractor. I had grown up with both a JD2510, and AC D17IV, so I was shopping for them. I looked at a nice 2520, and continued shopping. After I found the AC's bringing top dollar at auction, I called the guy with the 2520. He had traded it. Oh no!!!!! I called the dealer, and ended up buying it for less than the individual wanted! He didn't like JD's- said "get it out of here" !(He was selling Belarus)

I bought a big old Steiger, sight unseen, from a jockey. He turned out to be a liar. But I fixed it up, and used it for 10 years. It was brutal, but cheap power. When I sold it, it left here, like everything else, in better shape than it came. I calculated my cost into it, and figured it was still cheaper than leasing a tractor, and I had it at my disposal full time.

I bought a tractor through an on line auction, out of state, sight unseen (except for pictures) A little fixing, and it has done well.

Bought an old dump truck on line auction from a used car dealer. Probably 100 miles away in the next state. He claimed it was road worthy. He said he would put a dealer plate on it so I could drive it home. It was a slow ride. Barely made it. Fortunately there was a farm equipment dealer on the way home, who happened to have an in line 5/16 filter, and we proceeded! When I started in fixing it I found so much crud in the gas tank I took it off and steamed it out!

I think I have been very fortunate.

Well, best one ever has to be the first Farmall C I bought. I was 13, and had only had it home a few weeks. I decided I would clean out the "trunk" as I call it, the tool box under the seat. I basically got a bunch of rusted up trash out of there, and then, I saw it. A nickle. Wooo hooo. .05 recouped from the purchase! WOW! What a great day! :p I really couldn't care less, but, I set it aside in the shop. My mom saw it a few days later, and started looking it over well. Turns out, it is a VERY old, TRUE Silver Nickle. From the 40's if I remember right?? That was cool. ;)

Latest one is from my newest car. Bought that little Lumina for $175, found 2 $20's under the front seat when I was cleaning it out!!!! :p

I've been lucky more then not buying used stuff too. There is always something, but so far not too bad.

Pretty happy with the deal on the 860, saw an ad in the paper and called the guy so I could look at it....he said he wouldn't be home but it was sitting in the yard if I wanted to look it over......it's "disabled" so don't figure on running it. I looked it over and it had a toggle switch instead of a key, coil wire was on it, and battery hooked up....so his idea of "disabled" was the gas was shut off. Drove it around a little and found a few things wrong to bring the price down. Called the guy back the next day and made him an offer after explaining what it would take to fix it....took the trailer and brought it home.

Bought this old 7060 Allis, needed a power shift tractor to pull a round bale hauler. It wasn't my first choice, but it was close to home and cheap enough. I've had it for 8 years now, I've almost sold it twice. But last year the 'old wreck' baled us out a couple times when something newer failed, think I'll keep it ! It had some 'issues' when I bought it, but it was just simple 'stuff'.

Bob Bancroft,

A few decades ago, I just got back from selling a S10 chevy pickup, on the way home my brother, who was driving, pulled into a dealers lot. I drove off with a used 1/2 ton chevy truck. That truck got flat-bedded, many upgrades, many fixes, but dependable beyond asking.

It was ugly to most, but not to me.

Bought a low-houred 574 RC Diesel from an old guy about 12 years ago. The seat just wouldn't slide back, very uncomfortable. One rainy day I pulled it into the shop to see why the seat was stuck. Found a pony horseshoe lodged back there. I've had good luck since. The pony shoe has hung over the park-brake lever for hundreds and hundreds of acres as this tractor has raked 12 to 13,000 bales of hay per year plus other jobs.

Bought a cockshutt 30 diesel from a family friend just trying to help her out. Her husband passed and she knew I'm a tractor nut so she called me and asked if I was interested. I thought restoring an old diesel would be neat so I bought it. Started doing a little research and figured out they didn't make many. Needed alot of work but was worth it.

I bought a Case 830 COM from a guy in Iowa that I found on here. The 830 is my favorite tractor, and for sure my wifes favorite!!! It was and is everything he said it was.

Bought a Ford 4000 with loader from a neighbor, good tractor but didn't handle big bales on the loader very well traded it even up for a Case 930 Gas with a new Allied loader, got it from a dealer in Chatfield Mn. after inspecting it for about 10 minutes in -20 weather. Case 930 has been an excellent tractor although a little thirsty. Bought a Case 730 Diesel from a dealer in Preston Ia. great tractor Talked to the original owner, we became friends, he bought my calves every fall after that. Bought a Case 930 at a salvage yard, brought it home cleaned it up, nothing wrong with this one either. Has Factory cab and original glass it was overhauled and has a M&W Turbo a real work horse.

I bought a MM GB diesel from this site with just 1 picture. Talked to the owner on the phone and he described it very well. Went to pick it up and he said, oh i forgot to tell you my brother had the engine rebuilt 2 years ago, just before i got it last year. Purrs like a kitten!!

I often think it's partly perspective, sometimes I hear people on here complaining that a tractor they bought was a piece of junk cause it needed cap rotor plugs starter battery etc. To me those are easy and wear items no big deal at all. I had a Ford 8000, soon after I got it had to pull the rear trumpets and do the wet brakes over, ran me about a grand in parts, tractor was great for 10 years after that and I would say it was a great tractor. Also my Deere backhoe had to have about 5 grand worth of parts in the rear axle, yeah it was disappointing but still consider it a great machine and it gets used regularly. Same thing with all our little hundred series Ford's, most have been rewired, new waterpump etc over the years, even a few been split for various things but really can't say I'm unhappy with any of them. Machinery takes maintenance more than just oil changes, if you want none of that then buy new and trade in often, and keep your fingers crossed. But usually even a few major repairs don't add up to a many payments on a new machine

I seem to buy a lot of 'stuff' on Gunbroker and eBay. I must have a 'guardian angel' watching out for me as I haven't been stiffed yet (knock on wood). :)

I bought this tractor off craigslist last summer and made several calls to the gentlemen that owned it and asked a lot of questions . When I got there to pick it up it was what he said it was. It was 90% done and all I did was some adjustment and painting. I always look everything over good before I buy.

Bought a Deere 7000 six row planter for $3500 on an auction and put several thousand acres through it before I traded it off for a Deere 7200 12 row that has been equally good to me.

I watched an ad on CL one summer for about two months because I was too busy to check into it. I finally got a chance to go take a look, made the deal and on the way home I was thinking I had seen a pic of a tractor like this in an Allis book. When I got home I looked it up and found out that it was a very unusual setup. I have never seen another like it. Probably the most valuable tractor on the farm.

I needed to haul 150 Board feet of white oak from Northern IN to St. Cloud. My brother said He knew where a truck was sitting. (neighbor) Wh went over 86 Nissan extended cab. Q- How much for the truck? A- it doesn't run. Q- We figured that, How Much? A- well $50.00. Sold.
My brother and I towed it the mile to his house. Different battery. Spark and starter spun it well. No fuel. Checked relay, good and power to pump. Re attached the wires to the pump. Drove it back one hour later to get the title. I drove it today and have every week since then (2002) Jim

When I was in the bus business I bought a school bus that was a few years old sight unseen off of eBay. It was 17 hours away. I drove out and hopped in her and drove her home. It needed a little TLC but had only 39,000 original miles. Well worth it. It ran routes for years and all I did was replace manifolds. Dang 429.

I was looking for a small chore tractor with heat and air. I found an IH 886 in Oklahoma four hours away. I drove down on a Saturday to see it. It was the original owner and had 3100 hours on it. His best friend was there (who happened to own the IH dealer that sold it new. I loaded her up the next day and brought her back home. It's a time capsule and awesome tractor. Forget to plug it in and it's zero degrees? No problem - she starts right away. I won't ever let it go.

'98 Buick Park Avenue, at a GM dealer in Montesano, Washington. Nice car, 109,000 miles. They had it priced at 4 grand, then found out the radio, power seat and a few other items didn't work, so dropped price to 3. They said it was probably a computer module, and just "didn't want to mess with it". I got them down to $2,500. Took it to my mechanic. He called about 15 minutes later, "your car's ready". Turned out to be a fuse, "no charge". When I told him where I got it, he said "You'd think a GM dealer would know about the third set of fuses under the back seat."

Got interested in antique tractor pulling several years ago. Helped hook at several pulls while I looked on YT for a "puller". Found a WC 600 miles away in north central KY, made the deal on the phone, got in my truck and went and got it. Unloaded it and parked it in my shed when I got home. Hurt my back a week later and didn't touch it. Got well enough to pull so I showed up at the clubs second pull of the year, tech inspection revealed it was only turning 1250 rpms. Entered the 3000 DivII and pulled last. WON! Decided to enter the 3300 so payed up again, pulled last, WON! Long story short, I won 5 times before I even put gas in it! PS: I did up the rpms for the 5th and 6th hooks. No tach, by ear, and got it wrong by 125 rpm so the 6th win was a DQ.

I watch Craigslist on occasion. I came across an add for a 1963 Cub Lowboy. I answered the add, found out the lady that owned it was a customer who lived a few blocks from my business. I purchased the tractor with loader and three implements for $1,300.00. I have used it daily for four years now.

We bought some steel tanks from an oil distribution facility there was this 555B there fuel tank out and some panels off. I asked about it they said tank leaks, injectors stopped up and injector pump bad and two mechanics had failed to get it running. Make an offer. I told the man $1000 he says no I'll take $500. I said I'll think about it...ok if that's the best you can do I'll take it. Hooked a small fuel can on it, new filter, and primed it, fired right up drove it on the trailer and took it home. One rear tire and patch the tank. First picture is loading it to take it home.

Luck....
My baler was a lucky purchase, cheaper than I was looking to pay and in better shape than anything I had seen. Been working flawlessly for 8 years now.
Bought a 656 some years back. Was needing something to replace a 756 and found the 6 sitting alongside the road. About half the price any any I had seen and had brand new tires all around!

think its goodyear tires [junk] like most goodyear TRACTOR tires, had some long bar short bar no tracton and war out bad, never pays to go cheep on tracton tires

10 or 12 antique tractors I have sold went to the east coast from maine south all byers came with cash and left with a tractor, all good people to deal with.....those who showed up

Bought a 71 Mustang coupe with 302,auto,ac and the owner had sold it new when he was a salesman to an older couple who had it til 1988 when they called the salesman who had since retired and asked him if he wanted to buy it back. He obliged and his daughter drove it for a while and then he put it up for sale with 99k miles on it. I bought it and let my daughter drive it for a while and she had it 9 years with no major problems except I did put a rebuilt long block in it at 175k and she drove it to 230k and gave it back to me with several small issues including rusty floorboards, gas tank etc. I put a new tank in and got it running good again and I sold it for $200 more than I paid for it originally.

Goodyear DT710. I know a jockey who has piles of them behind the shop. Every time he brought a tractor in with them he got asked the same thing- can you put tires on it? After the first few he just had them replaced when they came onto the lot.

They are ok if you never work in soft ground or mud.
