Most annoying waste of money?

What has been your most annoying waste of money? I have two. Not huge but they bug me. I've got an 87 Ford L8000 (road tractor) that was a Pepsi truck. It was the first semi on the farm. It has a short frame and turns on a dime. Its an automatic so anyone can drive it in the field or around the farm. It's great because you can get a hopper trailer just about anywhere with it. The injector pump went out on the 3208 Cat in it. I hated to waste $4000 having someone do it but I like the truck. If it didn't have new tires on it I would have junked it.

The other is a Farmall M. The motor was fairly well shot so I bought a kit from here and had the head redone. New bearings - everything I always do. About $1700 bucks. I got it back together and was not real impressed with the oil pressure. I got so mad at it I decided to buy another M and swap motors just to get it going. I paid $800 for an M and got it home only to realize it was much better than mine. Power steering, live hydraulics, and an engine that doesn't use any oil. I junked my M and am using the cheap tractor on the mixer grinder. The one with a brand new engine is sitting in the back corner of the shed. Hacks me off every time I walk past it.

Did you replace the oil pump ? I did an engine like that and it was getting diesel in the oil and the oil pump was worn out to

LOL I feel your pain. Sold my Late model 630 bought a 6040 Kubota Was going to use that as my retirement tractor. BRoke my back at work last year so sold kubota got almost as much as I paid for it six years ago. Bought a 1520 jd for cheap 3000 looked rough but everything worked except gauges. put oil presure gauge on it low oil pressure. pulled pan someone had put a rebuild kit in. crank had been cut .10 rod and main Two bearings dirty not scored. plastigauged good even tight. had to rig up a sys to pressurize found it was leaking above mains. Short story long whomever rebuilt it forgot to put piston oilers back in. now oil pressure high. got it running and now the inj pump went out.

The most annoying waste huh...

How about taking MY time and MY saws to cut 2 extra cords of wood a year, so that we can have a fire in a shed to keep TWO CATS warm all winter long? TWO CATS. That is ALL that is in that shed!

For some reason it bothers me to buy plastic twine for round bales. Obviously it works and keeps the bales together but it's only on there a few months and then ends up as a big wad in the trash.

Tell me about it. I heat the old carriage house with an old monkey stove for the four cats. It's insane. I rationalize it by reminding myself there are two deep freezes and a fridge in there. They will work better if it is warmer in there. Still makes me crazy to walk in there and see those cats laid out like they were on a tropical beach.

Children  ! Spend all that money raising them then the expect to inherit! Next would be a wife  !

An old mechanic told me that many tractors had several piston, ring, sleeve jobs and the cam bearings were not changed and that caused low oil pressure.

Thats exactly it here!!

Both cats have their own box, with an electric heating pad of course. And then during the winter, mom tries to keep it at about 70 in there, which isn't TOO hard to do, it is a fully insinuated green house, that is actually built like a house. You walk by and look in the windows, and they are sprawled out, looks like it is 110 in there!!! :p

She finally realized that they weren't sleeping in their beds because they were too hot, so, the heating pads were removed. Thank goodness.....

Sorry, I'm talking snowmobiles again, but a Arctic cat EXT 550. Had "fresh top end rebuild!!!" get it running drive it for half an hour, shut it off and it's seized up. got it free but only runs on one cylinder and then backfires and shuts off and I've already almost put more than I paid for it into it. I loved it when it drove, just not sure if I can make myself throw another penny at the thing

Several years ago I needed to replace the IP on a 3208 I don't use much because I let someone use it and they had water in their fuel which rusted up the IP while it sat unused.

I couldn't justify $3000 to $4000, (or even WORSE because of not having a good core) for a re-man IP so it sat a while 'til I found a factory re-man IP still in the box on fleabay and got it for some $200 plus shipping.

Somebody had acquired the assets of a closed rock quarry and was selling out contents of the parts room and I got lucky no one else needed on that day!

I exchanged the injectors through a nearby diesel shop, don't remember exactly what that cost, but it wasn't too bad (at least compared to a potential $300 or more for an IP!

Probably the best deal I'll ever get on fleabay!

I ended up with a Ford F350 in a trade. I should have dumped the darn thing right then and there. I just am not a FORD guy!!! Well I started down the road of getting the diesel engine back in shape. Well two years later with a different used engine I am at needing $2000 of injectors to make it run right!!! I was in it reasonable but I now could have bought a NICE low miled truck for what I got in this thing now. What really ticks me is that I have never hauled a thing with this truck. I hope I like how it handles a load/trailer because I am married to the darn thing cost wise now.

Pretty darn sure it is the last Ford to have my name on the title!!! I have owned three Ford vehicles in my life. Every single one of them had some type of engine troubles. My GM products might rust down into a pile but they keep on running !!!

Every Ford or Chevy product that I owned. I got along fine with Plymouth, Dodge and Chrysler products.

I spent 1200.00 fixing up my brother in laws truck. Don't ask. As soon as it was running and past inspection. He sold it. Well at least he didn't come around the house anymore. Might have been worth it.

Bryce you are a good man. Doing those kinds of things only builds character and makes you an even better man. I like your posts. Happy farming.

Friend of mine who always drives junk thought he got a deal on a car. What happened is he paid about fair market. Inside of 3 months he had dumped about 3700 into a 1400 dollar car. Then tried telling people what a deal he got. I was visiting him one evening and after he showed me the latest repair receipt I looked at all his receipts for they darn thing, added em up and showed him that it wasn't such a great after all.

For me the money pits as far as vehicles go were the only 2 Chrysler products I ever owned. I've had great service out of both Chevy and Ford. An once the Chryslers stated cost too much I got rid of them quick. Only way I'd own another one would be if I could buy it new and afford to trade it off every 6 months!

I wondered how that Ferd situation was coming for you. I always used Blue Bird buses on Ford chassis but have only had one Ford car in my life never again. I think they knew what they were doing with the bigger stuff but there's not enough money to make me buy a Ford smaller than the '74 F600 grain truck in the shed.

LOL, I have told people for years that if buying an American brand front drive vehicle stay away from Ford, buy GM. But my wife put well over 200K each on a Town Car and LTD and I've had good service out of Ford pickups including one diesel that clocked over 350K before being traded. Been driving Chevy stuff the last few years but the Fords were good to us.

I think we have all had a few of those items we could have replaced just as cheap as repaired!!!!

I've had 5 ford pickups, 1 ton duallys and 1-ln 8000 truck. used the 8000 as a fuel delivery truck and the pickups were used as tire service trucks. Transmission, motor, torque converts, differential problems. Last 1 I bought was one of those darn 7.3 diesels for my own use. tranny went out 2 weeks after I got it, motor lost a piston 3 weeks after I got it out of the tranny shop, ford wanted 10000.00 to fix the motor. I should have known better, My last business we had 1 man that we kept to keep a fleet of them going for a construction company. I guessthatisthe reason I drive Chevy and dodge today.

I also thought I got a great deal on a ZR 580. After 3 pistons in 200 miles it became a ZR 440. Not as fast as it used to be but the 440's are bullet proof and it has 3500 trouble free miles since the swap.

I think it is a 7.3. Friend has a 7.3. He has bought the truck at least two times. I suggested a Dodge with a Cummins 12 valve or a Cummins transplant in his ferd. He just gave me that don't go there look, LOL. Seems like ford guys just don't know when to call it quits.

HP 15 laptop with windows 8.1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Without a doubt the worst money I ever wasted! The keyboard sucks, and I guess I don't have to waste any space on 8.1.

I have a 955k cat tracloader that I bought to do a few projects, used it,done with it,but it needs some work, and can't seem to sell it.I hate seeing it sit in the shed taking up space, and starting it every now and then, just to keep the batteries up.It needs to go.Mark

Ken it is a 2001 with a 7.3. It had puked the turbo and ruined the original motor. I know to stay away from the early 6.0 engines. Actually the 2006-2007 6.0 engine with all the updates on them last pretty well. The 6.4 and 6.7 are another thing with all the emission stuff on them. They can be real pricy to fix.

MN Scott: We have three Dodge pickups with the 5.9 Cummins motor. They are a great motor. The trouble is the rest of the truck is not that great.

The first gen trucks are just a 1970s pickup with a different engine in them. Poor steering and brakes. The second gen trucks have some issue with the injection pumps that can be spendy to fix.

I like the ride of the Fords but not the drive line. If this thing does not work out I may transplant a Cummins into it with a manual transmission. I have a wrecked one for a donor.

My most annoying waste of money is paying taxes. I pay them, the pollytikians waste it. An Ima gittin sic an tarred of it.......

JD Seller, We have 1st,2nd and3rd gen dodges. The only one that has ever had a pump issue is the 3rd gen and if you know a good pump person, it will not cost you over a $1000.00 dollars to fix. have done 5 or6 for friends and that is what the bill was after we were done. Admit that the package that the Cummins comes in falls a little short, if taken care of will last as long as the rest of the boxes. And yes we have Fords and Chevys. As has been said here many times, maintenance is your best friend. I will take my dodge any day over the overs.

Oliver 431 combine.....had a dealer in town and he wanted to get in the market. It was a piece of junk, lasted 3 seasons and was scraped! They sold a total of 2.
By contrast, there are several JD 95's that are 60 yrs. old and will still do a days work.

"ends up as a big wad in the trash. "

That's not so bad, mine ends up as a big wad around a pto/drive shaft, pasture mower blades, calf's leg or worse. Why does hired help think keeping the place clean is the owner's job?

The vp44 on the 24 valves is sensitive to low supply pressure. Cheap rebuilders don't replace the circuit board, which is prone to failure as well. Extended cranking on start-up is a good indicator of pending circuit board failure.

There are guys who have swapped the entire timing cover and components to run a ve44 in place of the common rail to get rid of the emissions components. They say it works quite well.

most annoying waste of money is paying insurance, and taxes, insurance companies will try everything to weasel out of paying you when you have a claim, and taxes usually go to support either a political party i dont like or people who refuse to work for a living
