battery corrosion

Why does my battery hold-down strap corrode at the point of contact with the tractor? I use a rubber bungee type to hold it down in my Ford 2000 and the only thing that corrodes is the "S" strap connection at the battery box. I clean this every year but this is the only place of corrosion.
Nothing on the terminals at all.

The Delco rep told us at ADOT repeatedly that batteries must be firmly clamped down so there is no movement of the battery. Bungee cords will allow the battery to move around; according to the Delco rep, you will only get one-half or less life out of the battery. Put in a metal clamp that will hold the battery down securely. I think that manufacturers did not make the original battery hold-down with a bungee cord.

If the battery is covered the fumes or some mist may come from the top of the battery and cover the strap. If it's close to one of the battery posts fumes may come thru next to the post if the post is loose or lost it's seal to the case.

When we first bought our JD 4600 we had a lot of corrosion around the battery, and I finally got the dealer to give me new hold down brackets and a different battery. The replacement is a Strongbox with a vent tube like a MC/ATV battery, it has been in 12 years with no corrosion and started after sitting all winter. They had me check for overcharging and that was not the problem, it was just a gassy battery, When the Strongbox fails I am not sure what I will do. If a new Strongbox is under about $125 I might go for another, if it has the fitting for a vent tube. You can't argue with reliability and success!

An old timer told me once if you clean your terminals very good and put grease on them they will never corrode and that putting a rubber pad under your battery and covering your terminals will stop the corrosion. It works.

dido, my 560D was corroding all the time and I cut rubber floor mats to fit under them and it stop the corrosion. just my two cents

I put a felt washer under battery terminals that stops corrosion and spray a coating on terminals and hold down frame that also stops corrosion. It has worked very well for me.

My dad always put rubber under the batteries, and 2 dabs of grease close to the terminals to hold pennies, corrosion will go to the copper first. I still do that
