there was a few comments on this subject and I wanted to add to it -- I had an older rear engine rider mower (john deere) that needed a new starter -- included a solenoid - john deere price 525 dollars -- mower worth 300 on a good day -- Ebay price 59 dollars and 13 more for freight -- REALLY? no sale for JD -- go green and get vasaline

Yep I have a JD Buck 4 wheeler that the starter went out on. JD wanted $530 for it. I went to an auto electric place and paid $150 for the same one. Of course I found it on line later for $55.

Aftermarket parts will always be cheaper than oem on brand no matter what machine . Very rarely is an after market part more than oem no matter what color cool aid you drink

I needed a starter for an older Polaris 4 wheeler, didn't think about calling a dealer. Local parts store wanted $160.00. Checked online found it for $32.00 paid an extra $8.00 shipping, and had it my door in two days.

I needed a starter drive for a Deere 620. I ordered one from my normal supplier. The drive cost me $35.00. customer was sure a OEM drive was better. he went to Deere and paid $90.00.

Both drives were marked "Made in Mexico" in the same place. I told my customer he paid $55 for the Deere box.

Needed a 54" cable for my dads golf cart. He was no golfer but used it to get around the farm and out to the fields to make sure I was "doing it right" Golf cart store said $18 for the cable and then there would be some shipping. Expected delivery 7-10 days. They called in 7 days and said the cable was in. I went to pick it up because they wouldn't drop ship it. The shipping was only an additional $31.00. I was furious! They took a couple of bucks off but that didn't help much. I'm still ------. It's an old cart and the parts are hard to find and you could assume you would pay a bit more for it--like $18. This shipping thing has really turned into a rip off. I won't be back to that place.

Funny. Way back when IH was still in business my dad had a Cub Cadet 60 riding mower. JD was selling a model 65 JD rider. Both had the same engine. JD was cheaper on parts by about 25%. So dad bought his parts at JD and started telling people he had a John Harvester 62 1/2 riding mower.

The freight thing gets me. I thing they are making a huge markup on shipping.

The only time OEM was cheaper was when I needed a Muffler for my '96 Dodge Cummins. Muffler shop didn't have one, but gave me a price on aftermarket. I called dealer and they had one; way cheaper than aftermarket!

Never could figure that one out.

Hi VS
Well it looks to me that there might be a closet cool aid drinker or 2 around L.O.L . There has been quite a few times I have found the genuine part cheaper than the jobber with machinery and the odd truck parts. The last memorable occasion was a new hyd pump for a case IH 695 tractor being $200 cheaper from case for genuine than A&I parts wanted. I have also found some JD boxed bearings are cheaper from the dealer, than I can buy them from the local jobber bearing house, i'm still out looking for a verdict on the quality of some Deere bearings though, But the customers always right L.O.L.
When I walked into the case parts counter and asked about that 695 pump, the guy gave the price and I said order it. He knows me well and said wow, we must be cheaper than Jobber or you can't get one to straight out say "order it"!. I said yeah check it out with A&I, They sell those parts to. He said yeah $200 is quite the saving and with case it was free shipping as well!.
I never automatically assume oem is always more expensive, and if I have a choice of more than one supplier of the same part, calling round for a few mins can save a fair few bucks to. JD A&I parts are way more expensive than the same part from the same warehouse in Saskatchewan, that Harvest salvage wreckers use round here!.

Working on an Allis Chalmers ED-40. Have the water pump apart. New bearing from one tractor dealer was $23, he had only one. Bearing from another was $34. A similar bearing from McMaster Carr is about $8. Problem is it is a 16mm shaft and standard bearings seem to be listed at 15mm, 17mm, with the correct 40mm od. Somebody is making a lot of money. The stock bearings are a little thicker than the standard bearings, but it wouldn't matter. Almost got the 17mm bearings and made bushings, but had already bought the $23 bearing.

Possibly a bearing with 15.87 mm ID and 40.00 mm OD? 6203 series bearing, very common, used in generators and alternators.
