Broke a 3/4 drive (the lever that switches direction) Have issue with taking it in and getting a chineese one as this is old American one. Any rebuilders or source of parts? What would you guys do???

I have gone to Sears store nearby and asked for parts for a Craftsman PRO drill, no longer manufacutered. Sales guy showed me how to look up parts numbers for each and every part, and he ordered the individual parts for me. Might have been on a Sears micro-fiche, I forget. Came in the mail a week later. Also, as I remember there was a Sears parts warehouse someplace, I could go and find parts...... somehow, I forget. I'd go to nearest Sears store and talk to them.

Guarantee is the same either way and I would venture that the quality is equal to or better than what you have now. Go for the trade and it will probably outlive you.............

I got rebuild kits for my 3/8 drive ratchets from Sears. Free, some assembly required. Wanted to keep the original ratchets for sentimental value.

Rebuild kit is available. Local store here used to give rebuild kits instead of total replacement.
Good Luck.

I would have to say that the quality is not the same. I do not like the laser etching that Craftsman is using now. Someday it will be hard to argue with them that it is a craftsman. My dad was going to return his favorite long double box 1/2x9/16 wrench. They tried to trade a thick sided one. Dad said it would be to tight to use in spots. He opted to think about it and brought his wrench back home. The sockets and extentions are thicker. That tells me they are not using the quality steel that they once did. I would say that the ratchet gears are junk now. I have alot of broken crafts man tools. I should be rounding them up and trading them in on something. A life time waranty is only good as long as the company last. Not sure how a Sears/K-Mart colapse would affect Craftsman...MTP

searspartsdirect.com is the website for pretty much any part for any Sears item. If you have a model number, it's pretty easy to find what you need. Me, I find the part number and then go to both Amazon and EBay and find the part a lot cheaper.

This short 1/2 ratchet style is from around 1970, no parts available. I broke a long one like this, told the Sears guy I didn't want my choice of a breaker bar or short oddball looking ratchet and talked him in to giving me the long swivel head. This new ratchet head looks like a Matco or an Allen. Your results may differ with a 3/4 drive.

Craftsman, Die Hard and Kenmore have been set up as separate companies from Sears and Kmart. From what I've read they would be protected in a Sears Kmart bankruptcy. Don't know if they would be sold off or be stand alone. I'm sure the "legal experts" here will chime in.

There are Craftsman ratchet kits on EBay all the time. Of course you have to pay for them. Never had any luck getting them from the local Sears store but then again, I can count one one hard the number of Craftsman tools which I broke due to defective workmanship. Usually it was from my stupidity like using a tool for something other than intended which, as far as I am concerned, is not covered by warranty.

Years ago I bought all Sears Craftsman lawn tools.....rakes, shovels, hoes, etc

I break something like a handle or rake teeth after a few years, I take it back and Sears gives me a new one no questions asked

Many of my hand tools are Craftsman too.....I break something, they replace it

No company in their right mind would buy up the Craftsman liability after Sears eventually goes under. All you guys with your tool sets from the 1950's that thought this was going to last forever are in for a rude awakening.

It was an unsustainable business model from the get-go. Like many other companies they assumed perpetual exponential growth and didn't anticipate foreign competition when they came up with it. This came around and bit them 30 years ago; it's just taken this long to succumb to the venom.

If you look at the places where the name and part number was on the handle they have ground that off so no warranty after that.
